Reports
background
Once again, the Trojan team was to be prohibited from participating in a World Cup Grand Prix. The team leaders then sued a sports authority and were found to be right. Thus the entry list for the Dutch Grand Prix consisted of 27 vehicles.
After the retirement of Brian Redman is committed at Shadow his compatriot Tom Pryce as a works driver for the rest of the season.
Arturo Merzario took up his regular place in Frank Williams' team again and this weekend drove alongside Gijs van Lennep , who was given the chance to take part in his home Grand Prix as a guest starter in the second Iso-Marlboro, which he just barely did missed. Also recovered from an injury, Hans-Joachim Stuck returned to the start as a March factory driver.
Jochen Mass was the only Surtees pilot to take part, as Carlos Pace left the team after a dispute with team boss John Surtees and was initially not replaced.
training
The training times resulted in a first row consisting of the two Ferraris owned by Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni . The second row was formed by McLaren drivers Emerson Fittipaldi and Mike Hailwood . This was followed by Jody Scheckter and James Hunt in the third row.
Tom Pryce achieved a respectable 11th place on the grid, as did Guy Edwards in the defeated Lola with 14th place. Jacky Ickx once again achieved a disappointing starting position for Team Lotus in 18th place .
Only the 25 fastest pilots were admitted to the race. Gijs van Lennep and Tim Schenken failed this qualification hurdle.
run
Lauda took the lead from pole position in front of Hailwood, Regazzoni and Patrick Depailler , who started from eighth place. James Hunt fell back from sixth after a bad start and collided with Tom Pryce, whose race was over as a result. Hunt himself also gave up two laps later in the pits due to consequential damage resulting from the collision.
On the second lap, Regazzoni took second place from Hailwood, while Fittipaldi overtook Scheckter at around the same time and thus took fifth place. Hailwood fell behind Depailler and Fittipaldi in the course of the following laps. This in turn passed Depailler a few laps later. Since the Frenchman was struggling with severe oversteer , he was unable to defend himself against the attempts by Hailwood and Scheckter to overtake.
During the last 30 laps of the race, nothing changed in the order of the points placed. Ferrari celebrated a one-two victory in front of Fittipaldi, who is still leading in the world championship.
For the second time in a row, Vern Schuppan was disqualified after the race. The reason in this case was an unauthorized tire change outside the pit lane.
