The 1952 Dutch Grand Prix took place on August 17th at the Zandvoort circuit and was the seventh of eight races in the 1952 World Cup .

background

Although Grand Prix races have also been held in Zandvoort for the past three years , 1952 was the first time the race had achieved World Championship status. Compared to the races at Silverstone and at the Nürburgring , the number of 18 entries was small, but with Ferrari , Gordini , Cooper - Bristol , and Connaught the most important participants were all represented. At Ferrari, the recovered Villoresi replaced Piero Taruffi . Villoresi was injured in a traffic accident earlier this year. Gordini competed with three vehicles for Behra , Trintignant and Manzon , Cooper and Connaught only sent one vehicle each for Mike Hawthorn and Ken Downing, respectively . The Maserati factory team was not at the start again.

training

The practice was dominated as usual by the Ferrari drivers Ascari and Farina, with Ascari securing pole position with 1: 46.5 min. Hawthorn was astonishingly able to keep up with the Cooper and secured the remaining place in the front row before Villoresi's third Ferrari.

run

The race only offered a bit of variety in the first few laps. Ascari won the start, but Hawthorn was two laps ahead of Farina. In the fourth lap he then fell behind Villoresi, so that the three Ferraris took the first three places and - as usual - escaped the field. Hawthorn was able to secure his fourth place ahead of the rest of the field. Most of the overtaking maneuvers were made by Stirling Moss , who had fought his way up to seventh position with the defeated ERA from a starting position in the back row up to the eighth lap. However, he had to retire on lap 73 with engine failure. Behra had parked his Gordini on lap 10 with a defective ignition. The leading Ferraris did not give up this position until the finish and thus secured a triple success again. In terms of points, this had no effect on Ascari, as he had already achieved the maximum possible number of points for a driver in a season with the last race.
