backgrounds

After the Italian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with two points ahead of Nico Rosberg and 89 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 208 points ahead of Red Bull and with 219 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Singapore Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red) and P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were two DRS zones on the route that have not been changed compared to the previous year. The measuring point for the first zone was at the exit of turn four , the DRS zone began 48 meters after turn five . The second measuring point was 80 meters before turn 22 , the DRS zone was on the start-finish straight and began 45 meters after turn 23 .

The following drivers went into the race weekend with penalty points: Felipe Nasr (six), Esteban Gutiérrez , Daniil Kwjat , Kimi Räikkönen (five each), Valtteri Bottas , Nico Hülkenberg , Rosberg, Pascal Wehrlein (four each), Max Verstappen (three), Fernando Alonso , Marcus Ericsson , Romain Grosjean , Jolyon Palmer and Sebastian Vettel (two each).

With Vettel (four times), Alonso and Hamilton (twice each) three former winners competed at this Grand Prix.

Mark Blundell (GBR), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Nish Shetty (SIN) and Steve Stringwell (GBR) acted as race stewards .

Red Bull and Renault used a further developed drive unit for the first time at this Grand Prix, for which Renault used three of the available tokens .

training

In the first free practice session, Verstappen set the fastest time in 1: 45.823 minutes ahead of Ricciardo and Vettel.

In the second free practice, Rosberg was fastest in 1: 44.152 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Verstappen.

In the third free practice session, Rosberg was again fastest in 1: 44.352 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Raikkonen. The training had to be interrupted by Wehrlein after an accident.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Ricciardo was fastest. Vettel, in which the rear suspension broke before his first timed lap, the Manor and Renault drivers and Nasr were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg was the fastest. Ricciardo and Verstappen drove their best time on the Supersoft compound, making them the only pilots among the top ten who started on Supersoft instead of Ultrasoft . Grosjean spun shortly before the end of the qualifying segment and hit the track barrier. Ericsson, the Haas drivers, Button and both Williams drivers were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Due to repair work on the line after the Grosjean accident, this segment started ten minutes later than planned. With a lap time of 1: 42.584 minutes, Rosberg set the fastest time ahead of Ricciardo and Hamilton. It was the 29th pole position for Rosberg, of which the seventh of the season.

Sergio Pérez was moved five starting positions back because he had not slowed down sufficiently in Q2 with the yellow flags waved twice in turn nine and turn ten , and he received three penalty points. The penalty was so severe because the driver could not see before these corners whether there were vehicles or marshals on the track. He was given another three places back because he overtook Gutiérrez on turn 16 on the same lap , where yellow flags had also been waved.

run

Rosberg won the race ahead of Ricciardo and Hamilton. It was the 22nd victory for Rosberg in the Formula 1 World Championship, including the eighth of the season. Ricciardo reached the fourth podium finish in the fifteenth race of the season, Hamilton the twelfth. The remaining points were achieved by Raikkonen, Vettel, Verstappen, Alonso, Pérez, Kwjat and Magnussen.

Rosberg thus took the lead in the drivers' standings from Hamilton, Ricciardo remained third. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes increased its lead over Red Bull and Ferrari and was able to win the title in the following race.
