The Buenos Aires ePrix 2015 (officially: 2015 FIA Formula E Buenos Aires ePrix ) took place on January 10th on the Buenos Aires Formula E race track in Buenos Aires , Argentina and was the fourth race of the 2014 FIA Formula E Championship / 15 . It was the first Buenos Aires ePrix and the second race of the FIA Formula E Championship in South America .
report
background
After the Punta del Este ePrix , Lucas di Grassi led the drivers' standings with 58 points ahead of Sébastien Buemi and Sam Bird , who both had 40 points. All three drivers had previously won an ePrix. In the team standings, e.dams was two points ahead of Audi Sport ABT and 12 points ahead of Virgin .
The Formula E School Series , in which pupils aged eleven to 16 from ten different schools in Buenos Aires competed against each other with mini electric vehicles, was the first frame race for a run for the FIA Formula E championship.
After Franck Montagny was banned from doping after the Putrajaya ePrix , Marco Andretti drove for Andretti Autosport alongside Jean-Eric Vergne . The grandson of the former Formula 1 world champion Mario Andretti made his Formula E debut and drove for his father Michael Andretti's racing team . Andretti took over the vehicle from Matthew Brabham . The Andretti team entered the fourth race with the fourth driver pairing.
After Ho-Pin Tung was represented by Antonio García in Punta del Este for China Racing because he took part in the 12-hour race in Abu Dhabi , Tung returned to the cockpit for this race. As in Punta del Este, Amlin Aguri competed with Salvador Durán instead of Katherine Legge , as Legge was once again involved in test drives for the United SportsCar Championship 2015 .
Nick Heidfeld , Bruno Senna and Vergne received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the power of each of their two cars for a maximum of five seconds from 150 kW (204 hp) to 180 kW (245 hp) during the race. For Heidfeld this was the third and for Vergne the second FanBoost in a row. Senna also received its third FanBoost .
training
The first free practice started at 8:15 a.m. and lasted 45 minutes. Buemi set the fastest time with 1: 09.475 minutes ahead of di Grassi and Daniel Abt . The training had to be interrupted once when Bird broke down at the end of the pit lane.
The second free practice started at 10:30 a.m. and lasted 30 minutes. Buemi again set the fastest time with 1: 08.993 minutes, followed again by di Grassi. Third fastest was António Félix da Costa . This training too had to be interrupted after an accident by Stéphane Sarrazin .
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each. Each group had 10 minutes to set a quick lap. Buemi achieved pole position in 1: 09.134 minutes ahead of Jaime Alguersuari and Nick Heidfeld . The top 10 were completed by Bird, di Grassi, Jean-Éric Vergne , Nicolas Prost , da Costa, Nelson Piquet jr. and Karun Chandhok . It was the first pole position for Buemi and the third for e.dams, thus reducing the gap to di Grassi to 15 points in the drivers' championship.
Qualifying had to be interrupted twice because di Grassi and Jarno Trulli had crashed into the track with their cars. Trulli did this on his first fast lap, so he couldn't set any time at all. Even Bruno Senna struck his car into the barriers and damaged him; but he could still drive to the pits.
run
The race lasted 35 laps and started at 4:00 p.m. There was no lead-up lap before the race, this time the pre-lineup took place around 200 meters from the actual starting positions and the drivers rolled into their positions before the start of the race. Jérôme D'Ambrosio started from the pit lane.
Buemi stayed in the lead at the start from Heidfeld, who passed Alguersuari in turn one on the outside lane. Behind were Bird, di Grassi, Vergne, Félix da Costa, Prost, Piquet and Chandhok. Félix da Costa had overtaken Prost at the start and passed Vergne in turn four , who, however, countered when braking into turn five and immediately returned to sixth place. With these overtaking maneuvers, however, the leading five drivers managed to leave a gap of around two seconds on the following drivers on the first lap. Michela Cerruti came to the pits at the end of the first lap with a damaged front wing and had it replaced.
Di Grassi passed Bird on the second lap, Félix da Costa continued to put Vergne under pressure but was unable to overtake him. At the beginning of lap three, Heidfeld used his FanBoost to catch up with Buemi, but could not attack him. Alguersuari braked at turn five , so that di Grassi was immediately behind him. Vergne managed to close the gap to Bird, which means that there were no longer any greater gaps between the first twelve drivers.
At that time, Cerruti was back on track two laps behind after the repair stop. Durán overtook Andretti on the fourth lap in turn one and was now in 14th place, Senna immediately behind took advantage of this and also pushed past Andretti. Di Grassi continued to put Alguersuari under pressure, but he was not yet able to overtake. At the front, Heidfeld had shortened the gap to Buemi and attacked him, but did not get past.
On the seventh lap, di Grassi passed Alguersuari in turn five and was now third. Félix da Costa overtook Vergne at turn seven and was now in sixth place, Senna overtook Durán and was in 14th position. At this point, Di Grassi was the fastest driver in the entire field, with a time of 1: 12.197 minutes he was the fastest Lap of the race. He managed to break away from Alguersuari and catch up with Buemi and Heidfeld. Abt overtook Chandhok while braking for turn seven , but braked himself, whereupon Chandhok immediately passed him again.
On lap 14, di Grassi passed Heidfeld , also in turn five , and was now in second place. Heidfeld braked before turn eight and had to skip the chicane, so that Alguersuari and Bird also passed him, but he fended off Félix da Costa's attack. One lap later, at turn nine, the right rear suspension of Chandhok's car broke, he lost control and hit the lane. Heidfeld passed Bird again on lap 16. Alguersuari, Vergne, Prost, Abt, Sarrazin, Oriol Servià and Trulli pitted immediately to change vehicles, as they expected the safety car to go out to rescue Chandhok's vehicle . Prost was the first to get the driver back on the track thanks to a shorter pit stop, followed by Vergne and Alguersuari.
As expected, the safety car was sent out on the track, but Buemi was stuck behind the Cerruti, who was about to lap it again, and was not allowed to pass her. He complained that he thought she was driving too slowly. At the end of the lap, all the other drivers except D'Ambrosio pitted to change vehicles.
The driver of the safety car made a mistake and placed himself in front of the lapped Andretti instead of waiting for the leaders who were in the pits to change cars. As a result, the leaders came back on the track in front of the safety car and caught up to the end of the field. Buemi led in front of di Grassi, Heidfeld, Félix da Costa and Bird. Behind them were the Alguersuari, D'Ambrosio, Prost, Vergne, Abt, Servià, Durán and Trulli who were driving directly behind the Safety Car and Andretti. Since the pit light had turned red, Piquet and Senna had to wait at the end of the pit lane until the safety car and the following vehicles had passed them on the track. They fell back to positions 14 and 15. However, Bird, who was driving in the pit lane immediately in front of them, had left the pit lane when the pit lights had already turned red.
On the twentieth lap, D'Ambrosio also pitted to change vehicles. The safety car was still ahead of Andretti, but let him pass at the end of the lap and was now ahead of Alguersuari, who was sixth. On lap 21, the safety car let the other pilots who drove in front of Buemi pass. However, since they had to catch up almost a complete lap to catch up to the end of the field, they used significantly more energy than the top five. The safety car left the track again at the end of lap 22. Buemi was in the lead in front of di Grassi, Heidfeld, Félix da Costa and Bird, followed by the lapped Andretti and D'Ambrosio, only then followed by Alguersuari, Prost, Vergne, Abt and Servià.
At the restart, Andretti and D'Ambrosio held up the drivers behind, so that the gap on Bird was already more than four seconds one lap later. In turn eight Buemi touched the wall with his right front wheel and the suspension broke, so he retired while in the lead. Vergne used his FanBoost to pass Prost.
Bird passed Félix da Costa a lap later braking into turn one and was now in third place. Piquet drove the fastest lap of the race to date with 1: 12.050 minutes and caught up with Durán. When braking into turn seven , he overtook him and was now in tenth place. Bird received a drive-through penalty for leaving the pit lane at the red light, which he took at the end of lap 27. He fell back to eleventh place.
On lap 26 , just like before at Chandhok, the right rear wheel suspension of the leader di Grassi broke in turn nine , but he only touched the boundary of the track and shortly afterwards parked his vehicle in such a way that a rescue without the safety car was possible. Piquet passed Servià in turn one and was now in seventh place. After his drive-through penalty, Bird drove the fastest lap of the race to date.
Vergne was immediately behind Alguersuari on lap 31 and attacked him several times, but initially failed to overtake him. On lap 32, the two cars touched when braking into turn seven when Alguersuari tried to block another attack. Vergne and Prost passed him by. One lap later, Alguersuari passed Prost again when braking into turn one . Heidfeld received a drive-through penalty on lap 33 for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane. At this point he was leading in front of Félix da Costa, Vergne, Alguersuari, Prost, Abt, Piquet, Servià, Senna and Bird.
On lap 34, Piquet tried to get past Abt on the outside when braking into turn one , but the latter fended off the attack. Vergne braked himself in turn five , so that Alguersuari, Prost and Abt caught up. Piquet also slowed down there and lost touch with the group in front of him. Abt attacked Prost when braking for turn seven , but was pushed onto the dirty inside of the lane. Here he lost control of his vehicle, hit Alguersuari's car and his right front suspension broke. Abt retired, Alguersuari drove on with his damaged car and fell behind Prost. At the beginning of the last lap, Heidfeld took his drive-through penalty, Félix da Costa was now ahead of Vergne, Prost, Alguersuari, Piquet and Senna.
When braking into turn one, Prost attacked Vergne, who braked himself and had to let Prost, Alguersuari and Piquet pass. Senna overtook Vergne at turn seven , both cars touching each other, but they both managed to finish the race. Alguersuari braked his damaged vehicle in turn eight and had to skip the chicane, so Piquet passed him in the last few meters.
Félix da Costa won the race ahead of Prost and Piquet. The top 10 were completed by Alguersuari, Senna, Vergne, Bird, Durán, Heidfeld and Servià. Durán was disqualified after the race because he had used too much energy. With that, Sarrazin reached tenth place. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Bird. It was the first victory for Félix da Costa and Amlin Aguri , and Prost was also on the podium for the first time.
Piquet received a penalty for disregarding yellow flags in the form of relocating five places on the starting grid of the next race, Trulli a penalty of ten places because the gearbox of his vehicle was changed in qualifying after the accident. After the race it turned out that the stewards had made an interpretation error and that Trulli had already served the sentence in Buenos Aires. Since he had not set a time due to the accident and was the last to start, it had no effect.
Despite his failure, Di Grassi retained the lead in the overall standings, Bird was the new runner-up ahead of Buemi. In the team standings, e.dams extended their lead, Virgin overtook ABT and was now in second place.
