report
background
After the Buenos Aires ePrix , Lucas di Grassi led the drivers' standings by ten points over Sam Bird and 15 points over Sébastien Buemi . All three drivers had previously each won an ePrix. In the team standings, e.dams was eleven points ahead of Virgin and 23 points ahead of Audi Sport Abt . All three teams had previously won an ePrix each.
Nelson Piquet Jr. For disregarding yellow flags at the Buenos Aires ePrix, Jarno Trulli received a penalty in the form of moving five places back on the starting grid , as the gearbox on his vehicle was changed after the accident in qualifying in Buenos Aires . After the race in Buenos Aires it turned out that there was an interpretation error by the stewards and that Trulli had already served the sentence in Buenos Aires. Since he had not set a time due to the accident and was the last to start, this had no effect.
There was a driver change at Andretti Autosport . Scott Speed took over the cockpit from Marco Andretti .
There was also a driver change at Dragon Racing , Loïc Duval took over the cockpit from Oriol Servià , who was the only driver to have finished the first four races in the points. However, Servià stayed with Dragon Racing and took over the position of Managing Director .
At China Racing , Ho-Pin Tung is replaced by Charles Pic . Pic had contested the first race of the season, the Beijing ePrix 2014 , for Andretti and finished fourth.
Michela Cerruti gave up her cockpit to the Trulli Formula E Team on her own initiative. Vitantonio Liuzzi was signed as a replacement at short notice .
Salvador Durán , Bruno Senna and Jean-Éric Vergne received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of each of their two cars for a maximum of five seconds from 150 kW (204 hp) to 180 kW (245 hp) during the race. For Vergne this was the third FanBoost in a row. Senna received his fourth FanBoost , Durán his second .
training
Originally, two free trainings were to be held. The first free practice session should start at 8:15 a.m. local time and be 45 minutes long, the second practice should start at 10:30 a.m. and last 30 minutes. Due to a storm on Saturday night, the track was not finished in time, so there was only one free practice session over 30 minutes.
Bird set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 06.588 minutes ahead of Karun Chandhok and di Grassi.
Qualifying
Qualifying was supposed to start at 12:00 p.m. and was postponed by ten minutes due to the postponement of free practice. It took place in four groups of five drivers each; due to the shift, each group only had eight instead of ten minutes to set a fast lap.
Vergne achieved pole position in 1: 05.953 minutes from Piquet, who was moved five places down on the grid and therefore had to start the race from seventh place. Nicolas Prost moved up to the front row. Bird, Daniel Abt , Stéphane Sarrazin , di Grassi, Jérôme D'Ambrosio , Jaime Alguersuari and Nick Heidfeld completed the top 10 , but he had to start from the back of the field because he used too much energy. Chandhok was also disqualified for consuming too much energy. It was Vergne's second pole position.
run
The race lasted 39 laps. The grid was set up immediately before the finish line, parallel to the pit lane, and the drivers drove to their starting positions from here. At turn seven , yellow flags were waved throughout the race , as the track here was very narrow due to the pit exit.
Abt started better than the drivers in front of him, but didn’t get past any competitors on the approach to turn one . The positions in the front remained unchanged at first, but when braking into the first corner there was contact between Vergne and Prost. Bird passed Prost before turn five and took second place. In the back field, Pic also turned in turn five and had to let all the following drivers pass. At the end of the first lap, Vergne was in front of Bird and Prost, followed by Abt, Sarrazin, di Grassi, Piquet, D'Ambrosio, Speed and Durán.
Durán was right behind Speed and attacked him several times. On lap three he also used his FanBoost on the starting straight , but he couldn't get past speed. Already at this point it could be seen that Piquet was the driver who saved the most energy in the front part of the field.
Meanwhile, Bird was right behind Vergne, but could not attempt to overtake. Senna drove the fastest race lap at this point, Buemi and he passed Alguersuari. With the exception of Pic, all drivers were within 15 seconds on lap eight. Duval also passed Alguersuari and drove the fastest race lap to date. On lap twelve Buemi passed Liuzzi in eleventh place. The leading group ran into Pic, who let all drivers pass.
Senna passed Liuzzi on lap 14 and Durán on lap 16, who had been overtaken by Buemi immediately before. One lap later, Duval managed to overtake Liuzzi. Vergne was ahead of Bird, Prost, Abt, Sarrazin, di Grassi, Piquet, D'Ambrosio and Speed, all of which were within six seconds. Tenth-placed Buemi was already seven seconds behind Speed, but was more than three seconds ahead of the other pursuers. On lap 17 Buemi drove the fastest lap of the race to date.
On lap 19, Sarrazin hit the track barrier at turn five , but was able to continue. Di Grassi tried to take advantage of the situation and overtake Sarrazin but couldn't get past. Liuzzi and Trulli were the first drivers to pit to change vehicles. The minimum time for the driver change was 63 seconds and was not undercut by any driver.
On lap 19 Bird put a lot of pressure on Vergne, passed him after a small touch of the cars and took the lead. Vergne, Abt, Sarrazin, di Grassi, D'Ambrosio, Buemi, Senna, Durán and Alguersuari pitted to change vehicles. Abt and di Grassi were able to overtake Vergne here, while Sarrazin lost a full minute due to a transmission problem on the second vehicle and fell back to 19th place. Bird drove on, although only five percent of the total energy of 28 kWh was available to him. On the following lap he had to slow down the pace considerably, as the remaining energy did not allow a full lap below the racing pace. Prost, Piquet and Speed passed him. All remaining drivers except Piquet and Heidfeld pitted on lap 20 to change vehicles. Piquet only changed the car on lap 21, Heidfeld only on lap 22.
After the pit stops, Abt was ahead of Prost, di Grassi, Vergne, Speed, D'Ambrosio, Bird, Buemi, Piquet and Senna. Vergne and Piquet had completed the slowest vehicle change with 70 and 72 seconds respectively and thus lost positions. In contrast, Speed had exactly the minimum time with 63 seconds and gained positions.
Chandhok received a drive-through penalty on lap 23. Speed passed Vergne on lap 24 and was now fourth. On lap 26, the tenth-placed Senna drove into the pits and gave up the race with a broken suspension. D'Ambrosio overtook Vergne on lap 28. Piquet, who had significantly more energy than his direct competitors due to the later change of vehicle, drove the fastest lap of the race several times in a row, went to Buemi on lap 28, to Bird on lap 30 and two laps later also past Vergne.
António Félix da Costa overtook Bird on lap 34, when the two cars came into contact. As the lap continued, Speed passed di Grassi and was in third place. He caught up with Abbot and Prost and put both under pressure. Di Grassi had temperature problems with his battery and therefore had less power available. He lost another position on lap 37, D'Ambrosio, Piquet, Vergne, Buemi and Félix da Costa passed him, one lap later Duval and on the last lap Bird.
In contrast to his pursuers, Abt had to save energy on lap 38, so Prost and Speed were able to pass him in quick succession. Vergne, who was sixth at the time, had to park his car at the end of the lap. Speed now attacked Prost, who slightly touched the barrier in turn seven , but was able to continue. Speed was unable to attack Prost until the finish line, and Abt was only able to defend himself against D'Ambrosio with difficulty. Buemi also had to save energy on the last lap and fell out of the points.
Prost won the race ahead of Speed and Abt. The top 10 were completed by D'Ambrosio, Piquet, Félix da Costa, Duval, Bird, di Grassi and Durán. The two points for the fastest race lap went to Piquet. It was the first Formula E race in which there was no safety car phase .
With his first win, Prost took the lead in the drivers' championship ahead of di Grassi and Bird. e.dams extended their lead in the team standings, ABT passed Virgin again and was now in second place.
