Colton Herta (born March 30, 2000 in Valencia , California ) is an American racing car driver . He has been in the IndyCar Series since 2018 .

Career

Herta began his motorsport career in karting in 2010 , in which he remained active until 2014. In 2012 he also made his debut in formula racing and drove the SBF2000 in the 2012/13 winter series . He finished the winter series in sixth place and was second overall in the subsequent summer series. In addition, Herta won the Pacific Formula F1600 in 2013 . In 2014 Herta competed for JAY Motorsports in the US F2000 National Championship . With two fifth places as the best results, he was 15th in the drivers' standings. He also started once in the Lites category of the GRC Rallycross .

In 2015 Herta moved to Europe and competed for Carlin in the British Formula 4 championship . Herta won four races and finished the championship in third place overall. In 2016 Herta stayed with Carlin and switched to the Euroformula Open . He scored four wins and was again third in the overall standings. He also took part in two events of the British Formula 3 Championship . He won a race in the process.

In 2017 Herta returned to North America and competed for Andretti Steinbrenner Racing in the Indy Lights . His racing car was used by Andretti Autosport and financed by George Michael Steinbrenner IV . With two wins, he finished third overall as the best rookie. In 2018 Herta stayed with Andretti Steinbrenner Racing in Indy Lights. Herta won four races, deciding all three races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for themselves. With 447 to 491 points, he finished second overall behind his teammate Patricio O'Ward . He also made his debut at the season finale of the IndyCar Series 2018 for Harding Racing in the IndyCar Series .

2019 Herta took first for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing on the 24 Hours of Daytona in the IMSA Championship WeatherTech SportsCar (WTSCC) part. He won the GTLM class. He then received a full-time cockpit in the 2019 IndyCar Series . Steinbrenner, who had already financed Herta's stakes in the Indy Lights, had meanwhile joined Harding Racing, which is why the team started as Harding Steinbrenner Racing from then on. In the second race of the season, his third IndyCar race ever, the IndyCar Classic in Austin , he scored his first victory, which was also the first victory for the racing team. With the victory at the age of 18, Herta also replaced Graham Rahal as the youngest IndyCar winner. In the ranking for Rookie of the Year he had to admit defeat Felix Rosenqvist by five points. He celebrated his second victory at the season finale in Laguna Seca .
