Austmanns Heideteich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Austmanns Heideteich is a heather pond in the area of the Steinhagen community , which was known among botanists for the occurrence of the rare water lobelia ( Lobelia dortmanna ).

Location and origin

The body of water, presumably created by wind blowing, is located southwest of Steinhagen, not far from the Ströhen homestead. At the beginning of the 19th century it was still surrounded by large areas of heathland, which, however, had already been replaced by coniferous forests in 1895.

Former flora

The occurrence of the water lobelia is already mentioned by Beckhaus in his "Flora von Westfalen" published in 1893. It says: " In a large amount in Austmannschen ponds to Steinhagen at Bielefeld namely in sandy, dehydrating sludge, not in the water ." Additional floristic peculiarities area further included the Vielstängelige bulrush ( Eleocharis multicaulis ), the beach Ling (Litorella uniflora) which bristle Schmiele ( Deschampsia setacea ) and the beak-sedge ( Carex rostrata ). According to Koppe (1959), the pond was drained in 1916 and converted into pastureland.

State since the restoration in 2014

The pond was restored in the summer of 2014 as part of compensatory measures that were prescribed for the construction of the Brockhagen-Ost industrial park. It has a size of approximately 14,000 m². Together with the adjoining grassland areas , the biotope covers a total area of 8.6 hectares. However, when the water body was rebuilt, some serious mistakes were made. A large part of the area was excavated so deep that the old seed horizon was removed. Only in the western part of the area, where a very shallow pond was created, was it preserved. Some floristic features could be observed here in 2016, including:

The lapwing ( Vanellus vanellus ) breeds at the edge of the water .
