Patrick Carpentier (born August 13, 1971 in LaSalle , Québec ) is a Canadian racing driver .

Career

Carpentier began his formula racing career in 1988 after a few years in karting in the Canadian Formula 2000 . After seventh place in his debut season, he won the championship title of this series in 1989. After he started in Pro Formula 2000 in 1990 , he became champion of the Canadian Atlantic Series in 1992. In addition, Carpentier started for the first time in Formula Atlantic , in which he was active until 1996. After winning his first race in 1994, he became Formula Atlantic Champion in 1996 with nine wins in twelve races. Furthermore, he started in 1994 in two races of the Indy Lights .

In 1997 , Carpentier switched to the CART at Bettenhausen Motorsports and finished 17th overall with a podium finish. Carpentier was also the best newcomer this season. In 1998 Carpentier switched to Forsythe Racing and competed in all other races in the CART series for this team. Carpentier couldn't keep up with his teammate and fellow countryman Greg Moore and finished 19th overall at the end of the season. In 1999 Carpentier got another teammate in Tony Kanaan and, in contrast to his two teammates, could not win a race. With a second place as the best result, he finished 13th overall at the end of the season. The season was overshadowed by a fatal accident of his teammate Moore at the last race of the season.

In 2000 the Canadian played his fourth season in the CART series and got a new teammate in Alex Tagliani . With two podium finishes, he reached eleventh place in the overall ranking. In 2001 , Carpentier won his first race in Michigan and at the end of the season came tenth for the first time and was among the top ten drivers. In 2002 Carpentier made it into the top group of the field. With two wins he finished third behind Cristiano da Matta and Bruno Junqueira . After he was three seasons better than his teammate Tagliani, he got a new teammate in 2003 with Paul Tracy and could not keep up with his compatriot: While Tracy won the championship title dominantly, Carpentier took fifth place in the overall standings. In 2004 , the Canadian played his final season in the series, which has now been renamed Champ Car. Carpentier showed his skills again and finished third overall with a win at the end of the season and was thus better than his team-mate Tracy, who was only fourth.

In 2005 Carpentier switched to the IndyCar Series for Cheever Racing and could not build on his success in the CART series. Without a win he finished tenth overall at the end of the season and was therefore better than his team-mate Alex Barron . After a short excursion into the 2005/2006 A1GP season , Carpentier ended his career in formula racing.

After taking part in a race in the Canadian touring car series CASCAR in 2006, he has been competing in the NASCAR series since 2007 , in which he has not yet won a race.
