Career

Cristiano da Matta in Indianapolis, 2004

From 1999 to 2002, Matta drove with the Champ Cars in the American Championship Series, where he won the title with Newman / Haas Racing in 2002 . He then switched to Formula 1 and contested a total of 28 GP races for Toyota Racing before being replaced by test driver Ricardo Zonta after the 2004 German Grand Prix . In 2005 he switched to the Champ Car series again, but could not build on the successful period of 2002.

On August 3, 2006, while training on the Road America racetrack in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, da Matta collided with a red deer that had run onto the track. Da Matta suffered severe head injuries and had to be flown to the hospital by helicopter for emergency surgery. After a subdural hematoma had been removed , he was in the intensive care unit at Theda Clark Memorial Hospital in Neenah, Wisconsin for observation until August 20, 2006. On September 22nd, 2006 he was released home, where the rehabilitation program that had meanwhile started is being continued. His racing team announced that his healing was making very good progress.

In November 2008, Da Matta took part in a kart race in Brazil that was highly regarded internationally. He also tested for the 24-hour race in Daytona. In 2010 Da Matta started in the Brazilian racing series "Fórmula Truck". In April 2011 it was announced that Da Matta would return to US motorsport with the Jagua RSR GT team in the American Le Mans Series . He ended his career at the end of the 2012 season.
