The Prébenoît Monastery (Pratum Benedictum) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Bétête in the Creuse department , Limousin region , in France . The monastery is located around 33 kilometers northeast of Guéret on the banks of the Petite Creuse .

history

The monastery was founded by the Benedictines of Dalon Monastery in 1140 on the basis of a donation from the Lord of Malval . It joined the Cistercian order with Dalon in 1162 in the filiation of the Pontigny Primary Abbey . The monastery received endowments from some noble families in the area. The lords of Boussac set up their tomb in Prébenoît. The monastery had the granges la Villatte, Bramereix, Molle, l'Écosse, Moisse and le Chassain in the vicinity and Ligondeix and Sainte-Sévère further away. In 1591 the monastery , which had fallen in Coming , was occupied by the troops of the Duke of Zweibrücken, who burned the furniture when they left and damaged the buildings, which were restored until 1622. In 1691 the very poor condition of the monastery was regretted. The size of the abbey has always remained modest. Before the revolution there were only two monks. In the French Revolution it was disbanded in 1791 and turned into an agricultural property. Around 1980 it was acquired by the municipality of Bétête, which left it to a sponsoring association. However, in 2001 there were disputes with the community, which took over the area again.

Buildings and plants

Parts of the church with a portal from the 17th century and the first yoke of the north aisle as well as a wall part and a vault part of the north transept have been preserved. The eastern and southern parts of the convent building have also been preserved and have been partially restored. Excavations were carried out in the church, which, among other things, uncovered the floor covering.
