Alberto Valerio (born September 6, 1985 in Ipatinga ) is a former Brazilian racing driver . In 2005 he won the South American Formula 3 Championship . From 2008 to 2010 he drove in the GP2 series .

Career

After starting his motorsport career in karting , Valerio switched to formula racing in 2003 and drove in the South American Formula 3 . He finished 18th overall in his debut season. After he achieved his first podium finishes in this championship in 2004, he won the championship title of the South American Formula 3 in 2005 with four victories. In addition, during these three years he competed in several races in the Brazilian Formula Renault.

In 2006 he switched to the British Formula 3 championship , where he was able to achieve eleventh place overall with a podium finish. He also made his debut in Formula Renault 3.5 on the last race weekend of the 2007 season . In the following British Formula 3 season in 2007, he switched to Carlin Motorsport and improved to eighth place in the drivers' standings. He was also denied a race win this season. As in the previous year, he started the last Formula Renault 3.5 race of the season.

In 2008 Valerio was signed by the GP2 team Durango for the GP2 Asia series and the regular GP2 series. His teammate was the Italian Davide Valsecchi in both series . In the first season of the GP2 Asia Series, the Brazilian was only able to score points once in fifth and finished 19th overall at the end of the season. In the 2008 season of the European GP2 series, he failed to score points. In both championships he was clearly inferior to his team-mate Valsecchi.

In the 2008/2009 season of the GP2 Asia Series, Valerio started a race for Trident Racing and finished 37th overall with no points. In the regular series he switched to Piquet GP and denied his second season at the side of the experienced GP2 driver Roldán Rodríguez . After scoring his first points in the GP2 series at the Istanbul race weekend , he won the main race at Silverstone two weeks later . This win was not only his first GP2 win, but it was also his first win in a European formula class. Since he was otherwise only on the road with moderate success and could not score any further points, he finished 15th overall at the end of the season. He also started again at a Formula Renault 3.5 race weekend.

In the 2009/2010 season of the GP2 Asia series, Valerio took part in the second run for Scuderia Coloni and finished 32nd overall at the end of the season. He also started for Coloni in 2010 in the main European series of GP2. After the seventh race weekend, the Brazilian, who could only score points in one race, was replaced by Álvaro Parente . At the end of the season he finished 22nd overall.
