Federico Leo

Federico Leo (born August 27, 1988 in Varese ) is an Italian racing driver . In 2011 he won the FIA GT3 European Championship .

Career

Leo began his motorsport career in 2005 in formula racing in the winter series of the Italian Formula Junior, which he finished in 13th place overall. In 2006 he was active in the winter series of the Italian Formula Renault and took 15th place in the overall classification. His main focus in 2006, however, was on the Italian Formula Junior 1600, which he finished with a podium finish in twelfth place overall. In the following season Leo switched to the Italian Formula Renault and remained without points in the season. In 2008, the Italian moved to the German Formula 3 Cup , where he finished ninth overall with a podium finish. He also took part in a race in the British Formula 3 Championship .

In 2009 Leo rose to the World Series by Renault and joined Marcos Martínez's teammate for Pons Racing . After failing to score points in the first eight runs, he took his first points at the season finale and ended up in 21st place in the overall standings. He couldn't keep up with his teammate, who came in seventh. In 2010 Leo stayed with Pons Racing in the World Series by Renault and got a new teammate in his compatriot Daniel Zampieri . He was regularly beaten by Zampieri and finished the season in 17th place overall. He also took part for Trident Racing in two race weekends in the Auto GP , in which he was 16th overall, and in a race weekend in the GP2 series , in which he was 32nd overall. In addition, he gained experience outside of formula racing in the LMP2 class of the Le Mans Series .

In 2011 Leo switched to GT racing. For AF Corse he started as a team-mate of Francesco Castellacci in the FIA GT3 European Championship and immediately won the title.
