Markus Oestreich (born June 3, 1963 in Fulda ) is a German automobile racing driver . In 2004 he won the FIA European Cup in the Super Race Trucks category.
Career
Kart and formula racing
Markus Oestreich began his career in karting in 1969. Here he was Hessian champion five times between 1975 and 1980 and won the German pop-kart championship in 1982 and 1983.
In 1984 he switched to Formula Ford 1600, where he finished fourth in the German championship and sixth in the European championship. In the following year he started in the German Formula Ford 2000 and finished the season in seventh place. In 1986 he switched to the German Formula 3 Championship and achieved eighth place in the overall standings with a Martini racing car. In the 1987 season he started again in four races of the German Formula 3 and also in two rounds of the European Formula 3 Cup. After that, he concentrated completely on touring car racing .
Touring car
From 1985 to 1988, Oestreich competed for the BMW teams Linder Rennsport and Schnitzer Motorsport in the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC). He achieved his best position of the season in 1986 in a BMW 325i with fifth place. In 1987 he competed in the World Touring Car Championship with a BMW M3, finishing in 13th place.
In 1988 he competed for Zakspeed -BMW works drivers with a BMW M3 and BMW M3 Evo in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) and was able to become the best BMW driver in the championship as fourth. In 1989 he switched to Opel as a works driver and was only able to achieve 19th place in the overall ranking with the defeated Kadett GSi 16V of the Irmscher team. In 1990 he contested five DTM race weekends in an Opel Omega 3000 24V . With only one championship point from the race in Diepholz , he finished the season in 31st place. In the following year he only started for the Isert team in the race at the Norisring . He drove his last race in the DTM in 1993 . At the race on the Alemannenring he started as a guest starter for the Persson Motorsport team with a Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evo II and finished eighth and tenth in both races.
In the meantime, Oestreich started his motorsport career at several one-make cups. In 1990 he drove as a guest starter in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany . In 2000 he went to the Renault Clio V6 Trophy again in a brand cup and finished the season in 20th place.
In 1994 he switched to Team Wolf Racing and drove a Ford Mondeo for one season in the Super Touring Car Cup (STW), which he finished in fifth place. He drove a complete racing season again in 2002 in the V8-Star with a Lexus GS for the Grohs Motorsport team and came 14th in the overall standings.
Markus Oestreich contested his first long-distance race together with Winni Vogt and Christian Danner in 1986 in a BMW 325i at the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race . The race, which is part of the ETCC, was finished by the drivers with fifth place and class win in Division 2. In 1988 and 1990 he started again in Spa-Francorchamps. In the 1990 24-hour race, he achieved his best result in this endurance race with overall victory together with Johnny Cecotto and Fabien Giroix in a BMW M3 Sport Evo.
In 1996 and 1997 he took part in the Daytona 24-hour races , which he was unable to finish. In the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring , he started at irregular intervals from 1986 to 2018. In his first year in 1986, he achieved his greatest success in this racing event with Otto Rensing and Winni Vogt in a BMW 325i with an overall victory. In 2002 he celebrated victory in the A7 class in a Porsche 996 GT3 together with Uwe Alzen , Timo Bernhard and Arno Klasen . In 2015 he was able to repeat this success with Volker Strycek and Moritz Oestreich on an Opel Astra OPC Cup in the Cup1 classification. In 2019, Oestreich, together with his driver colleagues Tiago Monteiro , Dominik Fugel and Cedrik Totz, won the TCR class victory in the 24-hour race for the Honda works team with a Honda Civic Type R TCR .
Truck racing
From 1992 Oestreich concentrated on truck racing . In 1992, 1993, 1995 to 2007 and again from 2010 to 2013, he competed in the European Truck Racing Championship . In the first few years he drove Mercedes-Benz trucks and thus won the runner-up title in 1992 and 2000. In 2003 he finished second in the Super Race Truck classification with a PAM 03 . He celebrated his greatest success in the championship in 2004 when he won the Super Race Truck title on a VW Titan . The following year, the VW racing truck finished second in the overall standings. In his last year in 2013 in this racing series, he achieved third place with a MAN truck.
