Previous model Opel Astra H.
successor Opel Astra K

The Opel Astra is a car - model of the compact class of the car manufacturer Opel and the successor to the Opel Astra H . The car was presented to the public at the IAA 2009 in Frankfurt am Main .

Still called Astra I during development, the name was changed to Astra J when it was launched in order to prevent the capital letter I from being misunderstood as 1.

Production of the Astra K began in July 2015 and was launched as a five-door model in October of the same year. The Sports Tourer has also been available to order since October 2015. The three-door hatchback model Astra J GTC and the four-door sedan Astra notchback continued to be built until 2018 before they were withdrawn from the market without replacement.

history

On December 4, 2009, the fourth generation of the Astra came onto the market as a five-door hatchback sedan. The wagon version Sports Tourer followed on 13 November 2010. Since September 2012 added a saloon offering. In April 2013, a convertible version based on the Astra J finally followed. It is offered as an independent model under the name Cascada .

Model variants

  • five-door hatchback (December 2009 to July 2015)
  • five-door station wagon (Sports Tourer; November 2010 to September 2015)
  • three-door hatchback (GTC; January 2012 to April 2018)
  • four-door notchback (September 2012 to August 2018)

Facelift

With the introduction of the notchback sedan in September 2012, the hatchback and the station wagon were subtly revised, so that from now on a three-dimensional chrome crossbar is used in the radiator grille, the ends of which are now bent upwards. The headlights have a black background and the bezels of the fog lights are now partially rimmed with chrome. At the rear, the Astra is now partially recognizable by a chrome strip (not with option OPC-Line 1) and a modified rear apron (not with option FlexFix [bike carrier]),

On the technical side, new assistance systems and new engines are used. From the end of 2012, a two-liter bi-turbo diesel engine with an output of 195 hp was offered. In addition, the 1.4-liter turbo gasoline engine with 140 hp now has an automatic overboost function that can increase the maximum torque by ten percent from 200 to 220 Nm in the short term. As of November 2013, the 1.4 liter naturally aspirated engine with 87 or 100 hp was discontinued, as the 1.6 liter, 115 hp naturally aspirated engine took over the position of the basic engine.

Equipment variants

While the Astra five-door and Sports Tourer are each available in several equipment lines, only the Edition and Innovation variants are offered for the Astra GTC . As usual, the scope and price of the simplest equipment line varies greatly depending on the country. The prices of the two most extensive equipment lines are identical in each case.

OPC

Opel Astra OPC (2012-2018)

The sportiest version of the Astra J, the OPC , appeared in the summer of 2012. Like its predecessor, the Astra H OPC, it is based exclusively on the Astra GTC and now has a 2.0-liter turbo engine with direct fuel injection producing 206 kW (280 PS ) and generates a torque of 400 Nm.

The special features of the Astra J OPC include the mechanical multi -disc limited slip differential from Drexler Motorsport known from the Corsa OPC Nürburgring Edition , a 355 Brembo brake system on the front axle, the Flexride sports suspension equipped with shock absorbers from ZF Sachs , the Opel own high-performance bucket seats with AGR - seal of approval and the exclusive exterior.

OPC Cup

In November 2012, Opel announced that it would be holding its own brand cup, the "Astra OPC Cup" , as part of the VLN endurance championship Nürburgring 2013. An Astra J OPC serves as the basis for this, which Kissling-Motorsport professionally builds for the customer teams. In the racing configuration , the vehicle generates around 300 hp and 400 Nm, also has various carbon fiber add-on parts, a 378 performance friction 6-piston brake system, motorsport rims from ATS in the format 9.5 × 18 inches and a lightweight construction -Body shell with integrated safety structure.

landing gear

The special feature of the vehicle is its rear suspension, which is designed as a torsion beam axle with Watt linkage . The additional Watt linkage absorbs the forces acting on the side and thus allows more elasticity where it is required.

Final assembly

Depending on the version, the Opel Astra J was built in the GM plants in Ellesmere Port , UK , and in Gliwice , Poland .

Due to the closure of Opel Bochum, production of the five-door hatchback was relocated from Rüsselsheim to Poland earlier than planned in early 2014 , in order to free up capacity for the Zafira Tourer in Rüsselsheim. The Zafira Tourer was supposed to fill the gap in production in Rüsselsheim. The Astra J was produced in Poland as a five-door and GTC. The Cascada and Astra H Classic were also created there at the same time. The Sports Tourer was assembled in England.

Fuel tank

The fuel tank holds 56 liters in all model variants. The LPG variant has a 48 liter (gross, net approx. 36 l) LPG tank installed.

transmission

Basically, all model variants are delivered with a six-speed gearbox . The non-supercharged naturally aspirated gasoline engines and the 1.3CDTI are an exception and are combined with a five-speed gearbox. Alternatively, there is a six-stage automatic. The power is transmitted to the front wheels. There were no four-wheel drives.

Dimensions

The Astra has different sizes depending on the model:

  • Length: 4.42 m (five-door), 4.47 m (GTC), 4.66 m (notchback) and 4.70 m (Sports Tourer)
  • Width: 1.81 m (five-door, notchback and sports tourer) and 1.84 m (GTC)
  • Height: 1.48 m (GTC), 1.50 m (notchback), 1.51 m (five-door) and 1.54 m (Sports Tourer).
  • Compared to its predecessor, it has grown by around 17 to 18 cm in length.

Luggage compartment

While the trunk volume of the five-door model shrank by 10 to 370 liters in normal condition and by 60 to 1235 liters with the second row of seats folded down, the volume of the Sports Tourer was retained at 500 liters; only with the seats folded down did the volume drop by 40 to 1550 liters. The trunk volume of the GTC increased by 40 to 380 liters. The notchback sedan has a volume of 460 liters.

The Astra J worldwide

In Great Britain, the Astra J (like some of its predecessors) is manufactured and sold under the brand name Vauxhall .

In the USA, the notchback sedan is sold as the Buick Verano , which is available with two petrol engines with 2.0 liters (254 hp) and 2.4 liters (182 hp).

In China, the five-door hatchback sedan is sold as the Buick Excelle XT and the four-door notchback sedan as the Buick Excelle (not to be confused with the "Excelle", which is a twin of the Daewoo Lacetti ).
