The Opel 40/100 PS was an automobile of the upper class , which the Adam Opel KG from 1912 built up 1916th

History and technology

The 40/100 hp was the largest and most luxurious model of the manufacturer before the First World War .

The car had a side - controlled four - cylinder block engine with a displacement of 10,160 cm³ (bore × stroke = 140 mm × 165 mm). It developed 100 HP (74 kW) at 1300 rpm. The engine was water-cooled and the cooling water was conveyed by a centrifugal pump. The engine power was transmitted to the rear axle via a leather cone clutch, a manual four-speed gearbox and a cardan shaft in an oil bath. This enabled the car to reach a top speed of 125 km / h.

The two rigid axles were suspended from three-quarter elliptical longitudinal leaf springs on the sheet steel U-profile frame. There was a subframe at the front to accommodate the engine. The service brake was designed as an internal shoe brake and acted on the transmission output shaft. The handbrake consisted of drum brakes only on the rear wheels.

The cars were available as a six-seat double phaeton , a six-seat torpedo , a four-door Pullman limousine and a landaulet . The cheapest model was the double phaeton at a price of 18,000 RM.

Production of the 40/100 PS was stopped at the end of 1916 without a successor.
