The Opel Karl (proper spelling Opel KARL) was a car model of the Opel Automobile GmbH . Manufactured by GM Korea and sold as Chevrolet Spark in other countries . The five-door station wagon is assigned to the subcompact class. It was launched on June 20, 2015.

In the UK it was offered as the Vauxhall Viva . The Fadil presented in November 2018 by the Vietnamese manufacturer Vinfast is based on the Karl. It is to be built in Hanoi from the beginning of 2019 .

Production of the Karl ended in June 2019.

history

The Opel Karl is named after Carl von Opel , a son of the company's founder Adam Opel . After the Opel Adam , it is the second Opel to have a first name from the Opel family.

With a base price of 9,500 euros (according to the price list of January 19, 2015), the Karl was the cheapest Opel at the time. With very similar external dimensions, the Adam has a lot more customization options as a lifestyle model, which is why its basic price and empty weight are higher.

Development and production

The Opel Karl is based on a GM platform that is also used for the current Chevrolet Spark , which the Karl and the Vauxhall Viva sold in Great Britain are largely identical to. It is produced at GM Korea in Changwon .

Technical data and equipment

So far, the Karl has only been offered with a 55 kW three-cylinder petrol engine without a turbocharger and without a balance shaft . A similar engine with supercharging, balance shaft and acoustically optimized covers as well as a newly developed six-speed gearbox is available in the Adam and Corsa . From December 2015 to April 2018, an engine variant with the same cubic capacity was also available, which could be operated with petrol or autogas (LPG). With the Karl, the power is transmitted via a manual five-speed gearbox. An automated manual transmission with five gears, which is called Easytronic transmission, is optionally available.

The front wheels are guided by MacPherson struts and wishbones , the rear wheels by a twist beam axle .

The safety equipment consists of four airbags at the front and two airbags at the rear, a tire pressure monitoring system and seat belt warnings at the front and rear. The standard hill start assist is unusual for a small car . Further equipment features such as a heated steering wheel, sunroof , parking aid and cornering light are available on request .
