The Brabham BT52 is a Formula 1 racing car of the team Brabham Racing Organization , which in the 1983 season was used. Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese won four Grand Prix and achieved two pole positions with the car developed by Gordon Murray . Nelson Piquet won his second world title with the Brabham BT52. With the BMW engine in the rear, it was the first time in the history of Formula 1 that a turbo engine- powered vehicle was the driver's world champion.

technology

Brabham BT52B from 1983

The BT52 (the designation BT51 before the BT52 was reserved for another model that never existed) looked like an arrow with a delta-shaped front wing . The radiator, the turbocharger cladding and the exhaust were set back in the rear of the car.

The turbo engine from BMW, designed by Paul Rosche, was a little overweight at 165 kilograms, but delivered up to 1,400 hp (1,030 kW) in qualifying.

Gordon Murray used aluminum and plastic reinforced with carbon and aramid fibers for the monocoque . At the front, the cell was closed off with a light metal frame, in which the wishbones were mounted and vertical struts were housed.

Sponsors and livery

The paint of the car was dark blue and white. Team boss Bernie Ecclestone had signed a sponsorship contract of around 12 million with Parmalat and a 4 million contract ( Deutsche Mark ) with secondary sponsor Fila . In addition to advertising stickers on the side panels of the wings and on the nose of the vehicle, the latter mainly included title sponsorship - the team was registered as Fila Sport in the 1983 season . Michelin , Santal and Castrol were other partners.

The 1983 season

For the Brabham team and Nelson Piquet, the season began with a win in Brazil in the opening race of the 1983 season . After a failure in the USA followed in France second place behind Alain Prost (Renault), who subsequently became the favorite for the championship and was able to build up a 14 point lead over Piquet with three more victories up to the Austrian Grand Prix . In the last four races of the season, however, Prost dropped out three times, while Piquet won in Italy and the European GP . With a third place at the end of the season in South Africa , Piquet was finally able to overtake Prost and win the drivers' championship by three points. In this race, Piquet's team-mate Riccardo Patrese won , who otherwise got along with the car less well and had retired ten times during the season. In the constructors' championship, Brabham took third place behind Ferrari and Renault .
