The 1990 San Marino Grand Prix took place on May 13th at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari and was the third race of the 1990 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
Seven weeks lay between the Brazilian Grand Prix and the third round of the World Cup of the year in San Marino. Several teams used this time to complete their new vehicles, so that the Tyrrell 019 with the then new, raised front section made its debut as did the Brabham BT59 , the AGS JH25 , the Benetton B190 , the Minardi M190 and the Lola LC90 .
There have also been several changes to the driver line-up. While Gary Brabham ended his Formula 1 career after only two unsuccessful qualification attempts at Life , his brother David joined the Brabham team, which his father Jack Brabham had originally founded. He ousted Gregor Foitek there , who then replaced Stefan Johansson at Onyx . Bruno Giacomelli tried to use the vacated space at Life for a comeback after he had left Formula 1 for the time being at the end of the 1983 season .
Emanuele Pirro , who was originally planned as a regular driver at BMS from the beginning of the season , was able to fulfill his contract after his illness had cured. His representative Gianni Morbidelli initially found no further employment in Formula 1.
A total of 13 Italians were registered for the Grand Prix taking place on Italian soil, eight of them were able to take part in the race.
training
Again, the first three rows of the grid were occupied by the respective teammates from the McLaren , Williams and Ferrari racing teams . Here retained Ayrton Senna towards Gerhard Berger the upper hand, while Thierry Boutsen time Riccardo Patrese was beaten. Nigel Mansell, however, again won the qualifying duel against Alain Prost . Jean Alesi in the new Tyrrell and Nelson Piquet in the also new Benetton model formed the fourth row in front of the second Benetton from Alessandro Nannini .
As a result of a serious accident in the Acque Minerale section , Pierluigi Martini had to refrain from participating in the race. His actually not qualified Minardi team- mate Paolo Barilla then moved up to the starting line-up.
run
Berger initially took the lead ahead of Senna and Boutsen, who had also started well. When the Austrian briefly interconnected in the Tosa curve, the two pursuers passed him. As a result of a collision with Ivan Capelli , Satoru Nakajima's Tyrrell hit the road barrier so hard that the engine came loose from the vehicle and a torn off wheel severely damaged the monocoque . Nevertheless, Nakajima escaped the wreck unharmed.
In the fourth lap, Senna's elimination brought Boutsen to the top ahead of Berger and Patrese. When Boutsen rolled into the pits after 18 laps due to an engine failure, Berger took the lead. A short time later, Mansell passed Patrese into second place. On lap 36 he tried to take the lead for the first time on the Tamburello curve. He got onto the grass next to the track and turned. Two laps later he retired due to an engine failure.
In lap 51 Riccardo Patrese passed Gerhard Berger in the lead. Alessandro Nannini was already in third place at this point, closely followed by Alain Prost, who, however, did not manage to overtake the Italian until the finish line. Nelson Piquet and Jean Alesi completed the points in fifth and sixth.
Riccardo Patrese won a Grand Prix for the third time, around seven years after his last success at the 1983 Grand Prix of South Africa .
