The 1971 automobile world championship was the 22nd season of the automobile world championship, which is now known as the Formula 1 world championship . The drivers' world championship and the International Cup of Formula 1 Constructors were held in the context of eleven races from March 6, 1971 to October 3, 1971 .
Jackie Stewart won the drivers' championship for the second time. Tyrrell became World Constructors' Champion for the first and only time.

News in brief Formula 1
- Lotus tested a turbine vehicle in Formula 1.
- The Italian Grand Prix in Monza saw the closest finish ever. Winner Peter Gethin separated from fourth placed ( Mike Hailwood ) only 0.16 seconds and fifth Howden Ganley was only 0.6 seconds behind the winner. In this race alone there were more overtaking maneuvers than in the entire 2006 Formula 1 season .
- On January 10, Ignazio Giunti had a fatal accident in a sports car race in Buenos Aires in a serious fire accident.
- On July 11th, Pedro Rodríguez had a fatal accident at the Norisring in an inter-series race. His Ferrari broke out while in the lead on the 13th lap and hit an unprotected bridge wall with full force. The car exploded on the spot and burned out completely.
- On October 24th, Jo Siffert was killed at Brands Hatch in the World Championship Victory Race, which was not part of the Formula 1 World Championship . The vehicle came off the lane, hit an earth wall and went up in flames.
