Ferrari Dino 268SP
The Ferrari Dino 268SP was a racing car that the Scuderia Ferrari engineers developed for sports car races in 1962.
Development history and technology
The Ferrari Dino 268SP, along with the Ferrari Dino models 196SP , 248SP and 286SP, was one of those sports cars that, like the Dino 246SP, had a mid-engine . The designation of the car refers to the engine displacement and the number of cylinders. For the 196S, for example, this means a 1.9-liter six-cylinder engine, which, like almost all Ferrari racing engines, was designed in a V-shape . Similarly, the 268SP has a 2.6-liter V8 engine. This is why the 268SP is often referred to as the “big fake dinosaur”, as it was the only one in the Dino series, apart from the 248SP, that did not have a six-cylinder engine.
The engine was developed by Carlo Chiti for the 248SP; Displacement and power increased by extending the stroke from 66 to 71 mm. With a compression ratio of 9.8: 1 and four Weber twin carburettors, it developed 265 hp (195 kW) at 7000 rpm and was installed lengthways in front of the rear axle. The engine block and cylinder heads were made of light metal. The transmission had five gears. The wheels were individually suspended from double wishbones and fitted with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers. A stabilizer was installed on the front axle. All wheels had disc brakes. It was steered by a pinion and rack. The car had a tubular steel frame and a two-seater Spider body. It was 4060 mm long and weighed 650 kg.
Racing history
After a message for the Targa Florio 1962 , which was withdrawn again, the racing model (chassis 806) made its debut in the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring in 1962 ; at the wheel are the two Mexican Rodríguez brothers Pedro and Ricardo . In the rain, Pedro lost control of the car on lap five and retired.
In 1962 , Giancarlo Baghetti and Ludovico Scarfiotti drove the 0798 chassis. After 230 laps, the journey ended prematurely due to clutch damage. After an eighth place of Lorenzo Bandini at the Nassau Trophy chassis was at the 0798 North American Racing Team from Luigi Chinetti sold. In the USA the car was used until 1966; Tom O'Brien came with it in 1964 to three victories in the US American sports car championship.
