Ricardo Rodríguez de la Vega (born February 14, 1942 in Mexico City , † November 1, 1962 ) was a Mexican racing driver .

Career

Ricardo Rodríguez was one of the youngest starters of all time in the automobile world championship . His first race was the 1961 Italian Grand Prix . At the age of 19 years, 6 months and 28 days, he drove for Scuderia Ferrari in a Ferrari 156 . He immediately qualified in second place on the grid and held the record for almost 55 years as the youngest driver to get a place on the front row of the grid in the Formula 1 World Championship. It wasn't until August 27, 2016 that he lost this record to Max Verstappen , who also finished second in qualifying for the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix .

Rodríguez was registered for six races, but started only in five of these Grands Prix. His best result was fourth place in the 1962 Belgian Grand Prix , which earned him three World Championship points. Just one race later at the German Grand Prix , he finished sixth and scored another point, his last.

On November 1, 1962, he had a fatal accident with a Lotus in training for the Mexican Grand Prix , which was not part of the World Championship . In the Peraltada curve, he crashed into the boundary and died from the force of the impact. The cause of the accident remained unclear. His older brother Pedro was also a racing driver. In 1979 the Magdalena Mixhuca racetrack in Mexico City was renamed Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez after the brothers Pedro and Ricardo Rodríguez .
