Giuseppe "Nuccio" Bertone (born July 4, 1914 in Turin , † February 26, 1997 ibid) was an Italian automobile designer and constructor.

Life

After completing an apprenticeship as an accountant , he joined the coachbuilding company Carozzeria Bertone SpA , which his father Giovanni Bertone founded in Turin in 1912 and which he also ran after the Second World War . During his time at Bertone, numerous series vehicles and sometimes spectacular prototypes from well-known vehicle manufacturers were created that bore his design signature. He also created numerous masterpieces for longtime friend Ferruccio Lamborghini , such as a Spider version of the Lamborghini Miura . Under his leadership the group of companies expanded considerably and gained international recognition.

"Nuccio" also took part in car races and won the Italian championship in 1953 with a self-developed Barchetta based on the Fiat 500 Topolino . In 1953 he finished third in a Ferrari at the Mille Miglia .

In 1966 he married Ermelinda Bertone , known as "Lilli", who headed the group after his death until the company was dissolved in 2014. The two daughters Marie-Jeanne and Barbara, who emerged from the marriage, also work for Bertone, Marie-Jeanne as vice-president of the design center Stile Bertone and Barbara in the Carrozzeria Bertone .

In 1977 Bertone participated in documenta 6 in Kassel in the "Vehicles - Utopian Design" department with two designs for a " Lancia Stratos Prototype" (1970 to 1971) and for a "Lancia Stratos HF" (1971 to 1973).

In 1989 "Nuccio" received an honorary doctorate from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and recently he was nominated for the honorary title "Car Designer of the Century". In 2006 he was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in Detroit by means of a plate with his signature engraved on it.
