Mille Miglia 1937
The eleventh Mille Miglia took place on April 3 and 4, 1937 and ran over 1,623 km from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia.
The race
Despite the isolation of Italy from many European countries after the Abyssinian War of 1935 and 1936, the number of participants in the Mille Miglia rose again over the 100 mark. Benito Mussolini wanted to bring international starters back to the race; Therefore, the organizers offered factory teams high entry fees when they registered vehicles for the race. Only two French manufacturers accepted this offer. Delahaye reported two 135CS via Ecurie Bleue , which were driven by Laury Schell / René Carrière as well as René Dreyfus and Pietro Ghersi . The second French team to bring vehicles to Italy was Talbot . Two T150Cs were prepared for the teams Guido Cattaneo / René Le Bègue and Gianfranco Comotti / Archimede Rosa . Mussolini's close connection to the race was demonstrated by the fact that, in addition to his driver Ercole Boratto , his son Vittorio also drove.
However, as in previous years, the favorites for the overall victory were the Alfa Romeo used by Scuderia Ferrari . Carlo Maria Pintacuda was the last to enter the race, who broke all the speed records up to now until the stopover in Bologna . René Dreyfus was the only one in the Delahaye who could come close to the times of Pintacuda. The Italian was also in the lead at the turnaround in Rome and with his overall victory broke the myth that the leader in Rome could never win the race. After Dreyfus went down, even a defective lighting system couldn't stop the Alfa Romeo driver. He drove the last few kilometers without headlights behind his team-mate Giuseppe Farina to his second overall Mille Miglia victory.
