Mille Miglia 1952
The 19th Mille Miglia , also Mille Miglia, Brescia-Roma-Brescia , took place on May 3rd and 4th, 1952 and ran over 1,574 km from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia.
The race
Before the race
After a slight decrease in the number of participants in 1951 , the number of pilots and co-drivers rose to more than 1000 in 1952. Almost every driver from Italy who had an upright racing license was at the start. 502 cars with 1004 drivers and co-drivers entered the race. 272 teams came into the evaluation. As in 1950 and 1951, the first vehicle to cross the finish line was not the winner's racing car.
After crossing the finish line, the cars jammed in downtown Brescia and worsened the chaos after the race.
The comeback of Mercedes-Benz
At the beginning of the 1950s, the then management of Daimler-Benz AG met, under the direction of Chairman of the Board of Management Wilhelm Haspel, to return to international motorsport with the Mercedes-Benz brand . Alfred Neubauer , who had been in charge of the Mercedes-Benz motorsport department in the 1930s , was again entrusted with this function. The return to the monoposto sport was not to take place until 1954 , as new technical regulations came into force there at that time. For the time being, the team should be active in sports car racing. Under the leadership of Rudolf Uhlenhaut was Mercedes-Benz 300 SL developed. With this vehicle, Mercedes made its comeback in sports car races at the Mille Miglia.
Two of the drivers were also active for Mercedes in the 1930s. Rudolf Caracciola , born in Remagen in 1901, was 51 years old at the time of the race. Something similar was true for Tazio Nuvolari in Italy for Caracciola in Germany; he was a legendary figure from the early days of international motorsport. In 1935 , 1937 and 1938 he won the overall ranking of the European Grand Prix Championship . He had a special relationship with the 1000 mile race. He won the race in 1931 and was the only non-Italian to win the Mille Migla until 1952. Hermann Lang was subsequently declared European champion in 1939 and participated in the race together with master mechanic Erwin Grupp as a co-driver. The third driver was the German sports car champion Karl Kling , who shared the cockpit with Hans Klenk .
The Scuderia Ferrari
With the entry of Mercedes-Benz, the successful Scuderia Ferrari arose a new opponent. Enzo Ferrari's racing team had dominated the races after World War II . 1948 and 1949 had Clemente Biondetti won; 1950 Gianni Marzotto in the Ferrari 195 S and in the previous year won Luigi Villoresi , one Ferrari 340 America Berlinetta Vignale drove.
Ferrari spread a total of eight works cars, three of which the Scuderia reported itself. Piero Taruffi drove a Ferrari 340 America , whose Lampredi - V12 engine was bored out to 4.5-liter displacement. Gianfranco Comotti drove a second 340 America for Scuderia Marzotto. Piero Scotti started the race with a Ferrari 225S and Giovanni Bracco , who came to the team as a substitute for the injured Luigi Villoresi , drove a 250 Sport . The other cars were registered by Biondetti, Eugenio Castellotti , Mario Bornigia and the Marzotto brothers Paolo and Vittorio .
Further works cars
From Great Britain Jaguar , Aston Martin and the Donald Healey Motor Company came to Italy with factory cars. Porsche had in 1951 first made international attention, the 20th overall as a French team of drivers on a Porsche 356 reached. Two Porsche 356 1100s were built for the Mille Miglia, driven by Wittigo von Einsiedel , Paul Alfons von Metternich-Winneburg and Richard von Frankenberg .
Fatal accidents again
This year too there were serious accidents on the partially unsecured route, two of which ended fatally. Vitaliano Grazzani, a 20-year-old mechanic from Milan , contested the race together with his friend Corrado Manfredini in a Fiat 750. The two drivers started the race at 23:31 that night; 70 kilometers after the start, in Peschiera del Garda , Grazziani died after a serious accident. The second fatal accident involved Pietro Avalle. Avalle was the co-driver of Sandro Fiorio , the father of Cesare Fiorio and the grandfather of Alex Fiorio . Avalle lost his life after the ALF-Fiat 750 overturned about 200 kilometers from the starting point in Brescia.
The course of the race
During training, Karl Kling had an accident when he collided with a Fiat 1100 whose driver fell asleep behind the wheel. Although the Mercedes was significantly damaged in the process (both drivers were uninjured), it could be repaired before the race.
For the third time in a row, the race started in the rain. The first leader was Giovanni Bracco in front of the Mercedes from Kling and Caracciola, the Ferrari from Paolo Marzotto and the two Lancia Aurelia B20s from Luigi Fagioli and Enrico Anselmi . For Bracco (according to eyewitnesses, the drinking chain smoker had a bottle of cognac in a special holder in the car and smoked four boxes of Chesterfield while driving) there was only the motto “failure or victory”; accordingly he drove impetuously. In Ravenna he was five minutes ahead of Kling, who took the lead at the turn in Rome. Taruffi fought his way through the field with the heavy 340 America Spider, was in the lead in Siena before he had to give up in Castellina di Chianti with a broken universal joint on the drive shaft. Enzo Ferrari now put everything on Bracco, who got all the support. After a breakneck drive he overtook Kling and won his 250 sport with a lead of 4 minutes. Fagioli surprisingly finished third, ahead of Caracciola, who lost a possible third place overall due to a defective radiator over the last 150 kilometers. He had to stop at the side of the track four times to refill water.
Best British car at the finish was the Nash-Healey of Leslie Johnson at the seventh place and both Porsche and the founder of Alpine , Jean Rédélé , celebrated class victories.
