Guido Mancini (born September 20, 1924 in Rome , † March 30, 1963 on Monte Serra Alta ) was an Italian racing driver and entrepreneur.

biography

His father, the Roman notary Ludovico Mancini, moved to Rieti with his wife and three sons in 1937 . Like his younger brother Carlo , Guido was enthusiastic about racing despite his father's objections.

Racing career

He was active as a racing driver in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He was known in Italy as a sports car driver , but he also competed in three monopostor races . In 1952 he started on a Ferrari 166 FL registered by Scuderia Marzotto at the Eifel race on the Nürburgring , where he was canceled in the early stages of the race. The missions at the Eifel race the following year and at the Gran Premio di Roma also ended with failures.

Mancini was more successful in sports car racing. He started several times in the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio . His most successful racing year was 1953, when he and Silvio Dal Cin finished second overall in the 1953 12-hour race in Pescara . In a Ferrari 375MM registered by Scuderia Guastalla , he drove to fourth place in the final ranking at the Carrera Panamericana .

Life after career

Like his brother Carlo, he retired from racing in 1955 and studied law. In 1958 he was one of the founders of the Itavia airline and was vice president of the company. Guido Mancini died on March 30, 1963 together with seven other people in the crash of Itavia flight 703 from Pescara to Rome on the slopes of Monte Serra Alta in the Monti Ernici northwest of Sora in the province of Frosinone .
