Mille Miglia 1935
The ninth Mille Miglia took place on April 13 and 14, 1935 and ran over 1623 km from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia.
The race
As early as the mid-1930s, the discussion about safety began in the Italian media in what is now Italy's most popular road race. Estimates went so far that up to ten million spectators watched the race along the route. Over a length of 1623 km, it was almost impossible to ensure adequate safety. This lack of security meant that hardly any non-Italian teams found their way to Italy. In 1935 there were only two British Aston Martin Ulsters . The security problem was exacerbated by the number of starters. In addition to the few professional drivers, there was an abundance of amateur drivers who struggled over the route. In 1935 the total duration of the race was 24: 32: 00,000 hours. That's how long it took a privately registered Fiat 508 Balilla to cover the distance. This meant that the car was on the road more than ten hours longer than the victorious Alfa Romeo .
After Tazio Nuvolari returned to Scuderia Ferrari earlier in the year , Achille Varzi left the team. Nuvolari decided not to take part in the Mille Miglia in order to be able to concentrate fully on the Monaco Grand Prix, which took place a week later . For Varzi was at Maserati , a 6C -Grand Prix cars converted into a sports car. When Enzo Ferrari found out about this, Scuderia converted a monoposto into a sports car. An Alfa Romeo P3 became an Alfa Romeo P3 2900 Biposto. The cockpit of the car was so narrow that only the slender Carlo Maria Pintacuda could sit in it. His co-driver, Count Alessandro Della Stufa, had to lean out of the car most of the time to avoid the tightness.
At the beginning, Mario Tadini led the race in an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza 2.6 ; Varzi, whose car was finished just before the race, soon retired after a technical defect. In the end, the Alfa Romeo from Pintacuda was clearly the fastest vehicle. At the finish he had a lead of more than 40 minutes on Tadini.
