Mille Miglia 1951
The 18th Mille Miglia , also Mille Miglia, Brescia-Roma-Brescia , took place on April 28th and 29th, 1951 and led over 1,574 km from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia.
The race
New racing classes
Triggered by the abundance of reports and participants, which had reached its peak in 1950 with 378 starters, the organizer divided the vehicles into new racing classes. Above all, the increased start of touring cars was taken into account; three new classes were created for them. The engine displacement was limited to a maximum of 1.5 liters. This corresponded to the reality of Italian automobile production after the end of the Second World War , which increasingly relied on vehicles with a small displacement. 426 cars were registered, almost 50 fewer than in the previous year.
Teams and drivers
The starting field became more international and colorful. Tommy Wisdom , motorsport journalist and also active as a racing driver since 1931, borrowed the DB2 from Aston Martin owner David Brown with which George Abecassis and Lance Macklin finished fifth in the 1950 Le Mans 24 Hours . Brown organized the transport of the car to Italy and provided Wisdom with organizational support during the race. Jaguar entered the race with three works cars. The three-time Mille Miglia winner Clemente Biondetti drove a Jaguar 3400 Speziale with a 3.4-liter V12 engine . Two XK129s were prepared for works driver Leslie Johnson and the young Stirling Moss . Moss, 22 years old in 1951, made Mille Miglia history a few years later when he won the race in a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR in a record time of 10: 07: 48,000 hours in 1955.
Another British report came from Sydney Allard . Sydney Allard was a dealer of special models with Ford V8 engines before the Second World War . During the Second World War he stopped production and began to bring cars onto the market again in 1946 with the Allard K.1. In 1950 he finished third in the Le Mans 24-hour race with Tom Cole as a partner. In Italy he started with a J2.
As in previous years, the Mille Miglia was one of the most important races of the year for Scuderia Ferrari , Enzo Ferrari's racing team . Since the restart of the race in 1947 , the racing cars from Maranello have always been among the favorites. After the failure of Franco Cortese in 1947, Ferrari won three times in a row in the following years, Clemente Biondetti in 1948 ( Ferrari 166S ) and 1949 ( Ferrari 166MM ) and Gianni Marzotto in the Ferrari 195 Sport Touring Berlinetta Le Mans 1950. In 1951 the number of registered Ferrari on over 20, three of them works cars; all of them Ferrari 340 America . The newly developed racing cars had a 4.1 liter V12 engine designed by Aurelio Lampredi , which developed 220 hp (162 kW) at 6000 rpm with three Weber 40DCF double carburetors. The Barchetta bodies came from Vignale . The vehicles were driven by Luigi Villoresi , Alberto Ascari and Dorino Serafini .
The Marzotto brothers started for their own racing team, including last year's winner Gianni Marzotto. Felice Bonetto drove the car with the largest displacement . His Alfa Romeo 412 Spinner had a 4.5 liter V12 engine.
The course of the race
As in the year before, the race was heavily influenced by the weather. It rained incessantly for almost the entire race. After just a few kilometers, the sports cars driven by professional racing drivers had their first serious accidents. Alberto Ascari started the race at 04:16 in the morning (hence the start number 416) and had an accident a little later. After the race, he stated that he had been blinded by the flash of a camera operated by a spectator and that he had lost control of the Ferrari on an oil spill on the track. The car crashed into a group of spectators; one spectator died and the car was destroyed. A little later, the two Jaguar drivers Leslie Johnson and Stirling Moss had an accident at the same point.
Dornig Serafini's career ended early in the race after a serious accident. The Italian, who was born in Pesaro , was injured so badly that he could no longer race. On the way to the Adriatic, Gianni Marzotto led the way before he had to give up after a damage to the suspension.
Luigi Villoresi had in the rain an accident, but could continue and finally won by a margin of 20 minutes on the Lancia Aurelia B20 of Giovanni Bracco and Umberto Maglioli . Third was Piero Scotti , who drove a privately registered Ferrari 212 Export Spider Motto .
