Career
Roberto Lippi was already successful as a sports car driver in the 1950s. In 1955 he shared the wheel of a Maserati with Giorgio Scarlatti at the Targa Florio . The duo reached eighth place in the overall ranking. In 1957 he secured the Italian sports car championship in the class up to 750 cc. In the same year he took on a Stanguellini also the 24-hour race at Le Mans in part. After driving 67 laps, he had to give up the race due to a defect in the ignition system.
Lippi became famous in Italy with the introduction of Formula Junior in 1958. He won the very first race of this racing formula in his home country and won the championship at the end of the year.
Count's ambitions in the automobile world championship were less successful . Between 1961 and 1963 Lippi competed for the private racing team Scuderia Settecolli , which had acquired a De Tomaso F1 - specifically the second of five chassis produced - from De Tomaso. In 1961 and 1962 the car was powered by a 1.5 liter four-cylinder engine from Osca . In 1963 Lippi first switched to a Maserati engine before installing a Ferrari 156 engine for the final event, the Italian Grand Prix.
Between 1961 and 1963 Lippi registered with the Scuderia Settecolli for three world championship races and five other races, which however did not have world championship status.
Of his efforts to the Grand Prix of Italy the years 1961 , 1962 and 1963 in Monza qualifying, only the first attempt was successful. Lippi was able to qualify as 32nd and last, but retired early due to an engine failure. In 1962 and 1963, Lippi clearly missed the qualification.
Apart from these world championship races, the Scuderia Settecolli and Lippi registered for the Gran Premio di Modena and Coppa Italia in 1961, in 1962 for the Gran Premio di Napoli and the Gran Premio del Mediterraneo and in 1963 for the Gran Premio di Roma in Vallelunga . A total of six De Tomaso designs were registered at the event in Vallelunga, including two for the Scuderia De Tomaso works team . Lippi finished fourth here. He was the best De Tomaso driver in this race and also achieved the best result of his Formula 1 career here.
After Lippi also competed in Formula Junior in 1963 together with Scuderia Settecolli, he ended his active racing career in 1964. He later dealt with driver training.
