David Brown (entrepreneur)

Sir David Brown (born May 10, 1904 in Huddersfield , † September 3, 1993 in Monte Carlo ) was an English entrepreneur, managing director of David Brown Limited, founded by his grandfather, and owner of the Vosper Thornycroft shipyard and the automobile manufacturer Aston Martin Lagonda .

Life

Brown was born on May 10, 1904 at Park Cottage in Huddersfield, Yorkshire . His parents were Caroline and Frank Brown. Brown attended King James's Grammar School in Almondbury and Rossall School, one of the most prestigious private schools in England in the early 20th century.

After finishing school, Brown started as an apprentice at the family business David Brown Gear Company Ltd. at the age of 17. The company founded by his grandfather specialized in gear and transmission parts. After the death of his uncle, Brown became co-managing director of the company in 1932 and then took over responsibility for the company's management as sole managing director in 1933. Brown was a passionate racing driver and motorcyclist from a young age, but his increasing responsibility for family businesses ended a racing career.
