The tenth Mille Miglia , also Mille Miglia, Brescia , took place on April 4th and 5th, 1936 and led over 1606 km from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia.

Abyssinian War

On May 9, 1936, Benito Mussolini officially declared the end of the Abyssinian War and the annexation of Abyssinia complete. The successful Abyssinia campaign marked the climax of Mussolini's power. The Italian King Victor Emanuel III. was proclaimed Emperor of Ethiopia , and the commander of the Southern Army in Ethiopia, Rodolfo Graziani , was given the title of Ethiopian viceroy. The war, in which 15,000 Italians and 800,000 Ethiopians were killed, had an impact on the Italian economy, which was mainly hit by a fuel and oil embargo by the Anglican states.

As a result, some motorsport events had to be canceled. But the Mille Miglia was held.

The race

The lack of fuel led to a new racing class. Vehicles with gas engines were now also permitted . For this purpose, cars were converted to this technology. However, some of these vehicles were extremely slow and resulted in an unusual increase in racing time. A Fiat 508 Balilla Gas drove 31: 28: 00,000 hours and was the only gas-powered car to cross the finish line. By the time the finish line was reached, the race was long over and the race officials had to wait for hours on the car, which was tormented by everyday Monday traffic.

The Scuderia Ferrari announced three Alfa Romeo 8C 2900A and was the clear favorite for the overall win; The only thing left open was which of the three teams would win. A tough duel developed that led to the closest finish in Mille Miglia history. At the finish, Antonio Brivio had a lead of just 32 seconds over his young team-mate Giuseppe Farina after 13: 07: 51,000 hours of driving time . Third was Carlo Maria Pintacuda , who was already 40 minutes behind.
