Giordano "Nando" Aldrighetti (born November 14, 1905 in Milan , † August 12, 1939 in Pescara ) was an Italian motorcycle and automobile racing driver .

Career

Giordano called "Nando" Aldrighetti was a more versatile athlete. He played soccer , ice hockey and was a racing driver. He contested his first motorcycle race at the age of 24, and in 1930 he won the Italian championship title in the Seconda series .

In 1931 Aldrighetti won five national races on a 250cc Ariel . For the following season he was hired for the newly created motorcycle department of Scuderia Ferrari , which Enzo Ferrari operated with Bianchi , Norton and Rudge machines from 1932 to 1934 . Giordano Aldrighetti and his friend Aldo Pigorini became the team's most successful driver and achieved 19 victories in three years. In 1932 he was also second in the silver vase classification at the 14th International Six-Day Tour in Merano with the Italian team and his colleagues Aldo Pigorini and Silvio Vailati .

In 1933 Aldrighetti won the Italian road championship in the 500 cc class on Rudge and prevailed against greats like Omobono Tenni , Terzo Bandini and Amilcare Moretti . In addition, together with Aldo Pigorini and Terzo Bandini on Bianchi, he was third in the trophy classification of the 15th International Six-Day Race in Llandrindod Wells ( Wales ). When the Scuderia Ferrari - Reparto Motociclistico was closed at the end of the 1934 season, Aldrighetti kept the symbol of the racing team, the cavallino rampante, on his helmet .

In 1934 Aldrighetti took part in an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza from Scuderia Ferrari for the first time at the Coppa Ciano on the Circuito di Montenero in Livorno and thus in a major automobile race, but retired.

In 1936 Aldrighetti won the quarter-liter race for the 3rd Italian Grand Prix on the fast track from Monza on a Moto Guzzi . In the same year he took part in the Mille Miglia on a Fiat 508CS Balilla Sport , but retired.

In the 1938 season he won the nearly 1300 km long street racing II Milano-Taranto / VII Coppa Mussolini.. From Milan to Taranto on a 500-cm³- Gilera - working machine with four-cylinder engine , breaking with an average speed of 118 km / to h the existing record. That same year, Aldrighetti also won his second title in the Italian 500cc championship.

In 1938, at the age of 33, Giordano Aldrighetti finally decided to leave motorcycle racing and switch to motor racing. Enzo Ferrari, who thought a lot of ex-motorcycle racers as pilots for his cars, gave him another chance. Aldrighetti had an accident on a test drive in which Ferrari was himself in the car. Enzo Ferrari injured his nose.

At the end of 1938 Aldrighetti was hired by Alfa Romeo as a test driver at the side of Consalvo Sanesi and Emilio Villoresi . On May 7, 1939, he drove one of the Tipo 158 Alfettas at the Gran Premio di Tripoli at the Autodromo della Mellaha in the Voiturette class and was eliminated. On July 30th, at the Coppa Ciano on the Circuito di Montenero in Livorno , he also failed to finish due to transmission problems.

A few days later, on August 11, 1939, Giordano Aldrighetti had a serious accident with his Alfa Romeo in training for the XV Coppa Acerbo on the 25.8 km long Circuito di Pescara . The first reports indicated that Aldrighetti was only slightly injured. He was taken to the hospital in Pescara , where he succumbed to severe internal injuries shortly after midnight at the age of 34.
