Giovanni Battista Guidotti (born January 30, 1902 in Bellagio ; † July 2, 1994 ) was an Italian racing driver and automobile manager.

Career as a racing driver and team boss

Giovanni Battista Guidotti worked as a mechanic at Alfa Romeo in the 1920s . As a test driver of the Alfa Romeo racing car, he was the first co-driver of a works driver in the Mille Miglia in 1928 . With Attilio Marinoni he finished fourth overall in an Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Sport . In 1930 he was co-driver of Tazio Nuvolari in his first overall victory in the 1000 mile race.

In 1932 he was a driver in the Le Mans 24-hour race . His team-mate was Franco Cortese , with whom he finished second overall on an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300LM behind Raymond Sommer and Luigi Chinetti (who also drove an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300LM). In 1937 he was again at Le Mans; this time as partner of Raymond Sommer. After a clear lead by Sommer in the early stages of the race, the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900A Spider had to retire after eleven laps due to an engine failure.

After the Second World War he became team manager at Alfa Romeo and led the team to the drivers' titles at the World Automobile Championships in 1950 ( Giuseppe Farina ) and 1951 ( Juan Manuel Fangio ). Occasionally he was also active as a driver. In 1947 , he and Carlo Felice Trossi finished third in an Alfa Romeo 158 behind Jean-Pierre Wimille and Achille Varzi at the Belgian Grand Prix .
