Entrepreneur
Airline owner
Jacques Dewez was a professional pilot and founded Air Nautic in 1958 with partner Raoul Wander , an airline for passenger and cargo transport. The company was based at the Nice Côte d'Azur Aéroport in Nice and at Perpignan Airport . The air fleet included a Douglas DC-2 , DC-3 , DC-4 , three DC-6s and a Boeing 307 . The airline flew charter to the UK and cargo to French North Africa . Later, scheduled flights on behalf of Air Inter and Air France added.
Two fatal accidents put the company in dire straits. On December 29, 1962, the company's Boeing 307 streamliner , coming from Bastia Airport in the direction of Nice, crashed onto Monte Renoso between Bastia and Ajaccio just after taking off . 22 passengers and three crew members died in the crash. Serious errors by the pilots were identified as the cause of the crash. On September 11, 1963, a Vickers Viking crashed on the way from Gatwick to Perpignan in the Pyrénées-Orientales department . 36 passengers and four crew members were killed. Again a mistake by the pilots was the cause of the accident.
On January 1, 1966, the company ceased operations and was taken over by Air France.
Real estate and golf
After the airline ended, Dewez became a successful real estate agent . In 1962 he acquired a 130 hectare property in Bonifacio , Corsica , and subsequently built a golf course , the Golf de Sperone , which opened in 1991. In 1996 Dewez was blackmailed . Members of the Frontu di Liberazione Naziunalista Corsu demanded four million French francs from Dewez. To support the claim, they blew up the golf course attendant's hut on December 11th. Dewez refused to pay and reported the incident. The perpetrator was caught and two years later sentenced to several years in prison during a trial in Paris .
Racing career
In the 1950s and 1960s, Jacques Dewez was active as a racing driver with sports cars in addition to his professional activities . Between 1954 and 1967 he competed ten times in the Le Mans 24-hour race . His best place in the final ranking was tenth in 1958 , with partner Jean Kerguen in a Porsche 550 A RS . In 1960 he was twelfth overall in the 1000 km race in Paris and in 1964 16th in the 12-hour race in Reims .
