Visite sous-marine du “Maine” ( German : Unterwasserbesuch der “Maine” ) is a French short film by Georges Méliès from 1898 in which divers examine the wreck of the US armored cruiser USS Maine in the port of Havana . As far as is known, the film was not shown in Germany .

In a single setting turned film shows the underwater part of the wreck of the "Maine" on the stoop of rope ladders three divers. A diver enters the wreck through a large leak and conceals the body of a uniformed sailor . The corpse is tied with ropes and pulled upwards. Another diver retrieves a heavy object from the wreck.

Production background

The film was part of a weekly series of four films that Méliès made about the Spanish-American War , a. a. Les quais de la Havane et explosion du cuirasse “Le Maine” , in which the Maine explosion was re- enacted. The film has production number 147 by the Star Film Company .

The underwater effect of the film was created by an aquarium filled with fish , which was set up between the camera and the backdrop with the actors. The corpse of the American sailor is undoubtedly a doll that served as a prop . According to later statements by the director, the film was a great success with the public.
