The BMW Turbo X1 was a prototype from BMW . The then chief designer Paul Bracq drew the body. He also penned the 6 Series Coupé E24 and the first 3 Series ( E21 ), which are often known as shark BMWs because of their characteristic long and pointed bonnets.

The Turbo X1 was first presented to the public in 1972 in front of the new "four-cylinder" and was intended solely as a technology carrier. It remained a prototype. The body was made of steel , while the first deformable bumpers (made of ABS foam ) in Europe were used at the front and rear . It also has radar sensors to warn of rear-end collisions. The chassis comes from the 02 series . In the interior, BMW showed the center console, which was inclined slightly towards the driver, for the first time.

In response to great demand from automobile fairs that wanted to exhibit the turbo prototype, BMW made a second car. Half of the rear wheels were covered in order to achieve better aerodynamics. These panels were remade for the earlier prototype in order to achieve a uniform look. Another highlight were the wing doors , the panes of which had a small sliding window on the second prototype, which was built later.

Many of the ideas and details gained from the vehicle were adopted in the BMW M1 , which was produced from autumn 1978 to the end of 1981, for example the pop-up headlights and the BMW symbols on the left and right at the rear.

The engine for the vehicle was also borrowed from the BMW 02 series. The engine, which is small for such a vehicle, with a displacement of just 2 liters, was able to mobilize 206 kW / 280 PS thanks to the turbocharger and accelerated the car to as much as 250 km / h.

Usually one of the two cars is at BMW in Munich, the other at the BMW center in Greer (South Carolina) in the USA.
