The G11 series of the 7 Series from BMW was announced on June 10, 2015, has been on the market since October 2015 and has replaced the F01 luxury sedan that has been produced since 2008 . The official presentation took place at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2015 from September 17 to 27, 2015. In the same year, the vehicle was awarded the Golden Steering Wheel in the luxury car class. Like all its predecessors, this 7 Series is also produced at the BMW Dingolfing plant.

In spring 2016 BMW presented the 12-cylinder variant M760Li xDrive .

The models with an extended wheelbase have their own series designation G12 and are marked with an L in the sales description. BMW Creative Design Director Nader Faghihzadeh, who also designed the 6 Series (Coupé, Cabrio, Gran Coupé), was responsible for the external shape .

Facelift 2019

On January 16, 2019, BMW presented a revised version of the G11. After 44% of the 7 Series (24,500 vehicles) were sold in China in 2018, the biggest optical change is a 40% larger radiator grille ("double kidney grille") in order to be successful there; Variants with a gasoline engine, which were no longer offered due to the changeover to the WLTP cycle 2018, are available again in the facelifted G11. The plug-in hybrid 740e was replaced by the 745e with a six-cylinder petrol engine.

For the car, industrially produced carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is used in combination with steel and aluminum, which saves up to 130 kg in weight compared to its predecessor; a three-meter-long carbon roof spar is used. The c _w value of the 730d is 0.24; Active air flap control also contributes to this.

The chassis has a double wishbone axle at the front with a separate lower link level in aluminum, and a double acoustically decoupled five- link axle at the rear . The standard equipment includes two-axle air suspension with automatic level control and dynamic damper control . In addition, “ integral active steering ” is available. The brake system has ventilated disc brakes all around, with four-piston fixed calipers at the front.

With the optional “remote-controlled parking” option, it is the first series vehicle in the world to be able to maneuver in and out of head parking spaces or garages without a driver at the wheel. This is activated by the driver using a display key and carried out partially automatically by the vehicle, while the driver watches out for obstacles.

LED headlights are standard equipment, and the laser light familiar from the BMW i8 is available as an option.

The longer version G12 can be ordered with a panoramic glass roof that contains illuminated graphics (“ Sky Lounge ”). With this, a graphic printed on the glass is illuminated from the side by LED elements.

Noise comfort was improved during the 2019 facelift: Among other things, the rear wheel arches received new shielding to reduce the rolling noise, and from the 750i , thicker side windows with a thickness of 5.1 mm are used as standard.

Since January 2019, the G11 / G12 have also had a fully digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch display. The infotainment system is kept up -to- date via a built-in SIM card with unlimited data volume. The update on autonomous parking in mid-2019 should also be wireless. A reversing assistant is new as part of the parking assistant; it is intended to support the driver when parking and maneuvering in tight spaces, for example in multi-storey car parks, courtyard entrances or on mountain passes. In principle, the reversing assistant is a macro that plays backwards : the driver's steering movements for the last distance driven forward and at a maximum speed of 36 km / h are saved. When the reversing assistant is executed, the previously recorded line is driven in reverse for a distance of up to 50 meters; the driver has to press the accelerator and brake pedals and still pay attention to the surroundings.
