The E65 series is the name of the fourth generation of the 7 series from the car manufacturer BMW , which was built from autumn 2001 to late summer 2008. It replaced the E38 series .
The iDrive operating concept was introduced for the first time with the E65 . The vehicle is assigned to the luxury class . The long version is called E66 , the special protection version is called E67 , while the variant with hydrogen drive is called E68 (see also BMW Hydrogen 7 ). The basic prices in Germany ranged from € 58,500 (730d, 2003) to € 127,500 (760Li, 2008).
In October 2008 the successor model F01 was presented.
Model history
General
The new 7 Series (E65) was formally presented at the IAA in late summer 2001 . The gasoline engine models 735i and 745i went on sale in November 2001.
In April 2002 the long versions 735Li and 745Li appeared, these models with a wheelbase extended by 140 millimeters have their own series designation (E66). A few months later the range was supplemented by the diesel drive variants 730d and 740d.
With the appearance of the E65, the order of the letters for the long versions was changed from 7xxiL back to 7xxLi , as had been introduced in the E3 series .
design
The design broke with the conservative line of its predecessor E38 and was controversial. The front section and the distinctive trunk lid in particular were representative of the new design line under the head of design at the time, Chris Bangle .
The front headlights of the US version differ from the European version by the so-called "amber corners", the yellow glazing of the indicator elements, which is required by law in the USA.
Facelift
From model year 2003 the adaptive headlights were available as additional equipment.
A major facelift took place in April 2005. It was formally shown publicly for the first time at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show .
Although the 7 Series had already been well received abroad (for example in the USA , Russia , Asia and the Arab world), the design was too extroverted for most Europeans . The ambivalent design therefore required profound changes. During the scheduled product refreshment (called “LCI” (Lifecycle Impulse) in BMW jargon ) in the middle of the model range's life cycle, the car got a significantly different appearance.
The front became rounder overall. The kidneys were enlarged and the chrome frame widened . The headlights have been converted to bi-xenon as standard, are flatter, have a more flowing shape and the so-called "bags under the eyes" have disappeared in order to convey a friendlier image of the front. Since the revision, the bonnet merges smoothly into the headlights and kidneys.
At the rear, the often criticized trunk plateau was concealed by integrating the trunk lid into the rest of the rear using widespread rear lights and a horizontal chrome strip. The rear lights got a new design with LED technology. The rear apron has also been modified. The revised rear now looks noticeably wider. In addition, every 7-series model now has chrome applications on the bumper strips, which was previously only available for the long versions (not applicable to the "Shadow Line" option).
Inside, the innovative, but highly criticized iDrive operating concept due to its complexity, has been revised and simplified. In addition, new colors ("Barber Red Metallic", "Michigan Blue Metallic", "Monaco Blue Metallic", "Deep Green Metallic") and light alloy wheels (17 to 21 inches) were offered. All engine variants with the exception of the 760i have been revised.
The model update also brought about a deterioration for customers and an improvement for workshops: If a lamp in the parking light needs to be replaced, the front bumper and then the headlights must be removed.
In September 2005 the first 7-series long version with a diesel engine was presented as the 730Ld.
In autumn 2005, the night vision assistant BMW Night Vision was introduced in Germany at the same time as the first available car high beam assistant .
The replacement of the model by the internally designated F01 took place on November 15, 2008.
drive
When sales started in November 2001, only the 735i and 745i were available. A few months later the range was supplemented by the diesel variants 730d and 740d.
In the spring of 2003, the engine range was rounded off at the top and bottom with the 730i and 760i models, both of which appeared at the same time as long versions. The twelve-cylinder model has four-valve technology and direct petrol injection , which was combined for the first time with the fully variable valve control Valvetronic . The diesel models 730d and 740d have second-generation common rail injection .
In September 2006, BMW increased the maximum output of the 745d to 242 kW (329 hp) and the maximum torque to 750 Nm (previously 700 Nm). Buyers who purchased the 4.4-liter diesel engine with a maximum output of 220 kW (299 PS) can use a software update to increase the maximum output to 242 kW (329 PS). At the same time the first 7-series long version with a diesel engine was presented as the 730Ld. The diesel models 730d and 745d have third generation common rail technology. The 745d has a twin turbo charger , the 730d only uses a turbocharger.
The E65 was the world's first car with a standard six- speed automatic transmission that is operated via a selector lever on the steering wheel.
