The M57 is a six-cylinder - diesel engine from BMW , whose production in July 1998 in Upper Austria's Steyr began. It is a common rail turbodiesel with direct injection .

technology

The BMW M57 is a water cooled turbocharged inline six-cylinder - diesel engine with common rail injection proper. Many features were essentially taken over from the previous M51 engine . The M57 received two technical revisions in around ten years of construction . The crankcase of the engine is made of gray cast iron up to the second technical revision (TÜ2) , from TÜ2 it is made of aluminum. In the course of TÜ2, the engine combustion chamber was also revised. The injection pressure for the 2.5 liter base engine is 1350 bar, for all other M57 engines it is 1600 bar. The fuel is injected through solenoid valves, with the exception of the M57D30TÜ2OL and the M57D30TÜ2TOP with piezo injectors. The fuel pump and the DDE-5 injection control unit come from Bosch . There are different combinations of turbochargers. The M57D30TÜTOP, built from 2004 onwards, has a KP39 high pressure charger and a K26 low pressure charger from BorgWarner . The M57 engines work with a compression ratio of 16.5: 1 up to 18: 1, especially the engines of the upper power levels with more than one turbocharger have a lower compression. Each cylinder of an M57 has four valves, there are a total of 24 valves. The valves are operated by two chain-driven overhead camshafts . There are swirl flaps in the intake manifolds of this engine, depending on the year of construction, transmission configuration and emissions standard . These bring about an improvement in the cylinder filling level and thus save fuel and emissions. In some cases the swirl flap mechanism of the engine variants tends to break before the technical revisions (TU and TU2) under the constant stress of the swirl flaps made of metal here. This can lead to loosened swirl flaps getting into the combustion chamber and damaging the piston and cylinder head. Since the first technical revision (TU), the swirl flap mechanism has been made of plastic and its reliability has been increased.

In 1998 the M57 engine family was introduced as a new product with the 2.9 liter (2926 cm³) M57D30 . There were two versions of the D30, which were identical in performance , but differed in torque by 20 Nm. Later there was a variant with increased torque and additionally increased power. It was used in the following models:

  • 130 kW and 390 Nm
  • 135 kW and 390 Nm
    • in the E39 as 530d
    • in the E46 as 330d / 330xd
  • 135 kW and 410 Nm
    • in the E38 as 730d
    • in the E53 as X5 3.0d
  • 142 kW and 410 Nm
    • in the E39 as 530d
  • 142 kW and 430 Nm
    • in the E38 as 730d
M57TÜD30

In 2002 the M57D30TÜ with 3.0 liters (2993 cm³) displacement was presented as a revised version of the D30 and thus as a high-performance engine in the E65 . When it was first introduced, it had 160 kW and 500 Nm, followed in 2003 by a version reduced to 150 kW and 410 Nm. In 2004, based on the M57D30TÜ, a high-performance variant with variable bi-turbo (step charging ) was introduced: 200 kW and 560 Nm were available in 2004. It was used in the following models:

  • 150 kW and 410 Nm
    • in the E46 as 330d / 330Cd / 330xd
    • in the E83 as X3 3.0d
  • 160 kW and 500 Nm
  • 200 kW and 560 Nm
M57TÜ2D30

In March 2005 the 3.0 L (2993 cm³ displacement) variant was revised, which now achieved 170 kW and 500 Nm. In September 2006 it was reduced to 145 kW and 400 Nm for the 325d , which followed in 2007 for the 525d . In 2007 the engine output was increased again a little. For the 5 Series (E60 / E61) , X5 (E70) and X6 (E71) , the nominal power was now 173 kW and 500 Nm or 520 Nm for the X5 and X6.

It was used in the following models:

  • 173 kW and 500/520 Nm
    • in the E60 / E61 as 530d
    • in the E70 as X5 xDrive30d
    • in the E71 as X6 xDrive30d

In September 2006, based on the M57TÜ2D30, a revised version of the engine from the 535d with 210 kW and 580 Nm appeared, which was used in the following models:

Internally, the three variants of the M57TÜ2D30 are distinguished by the ending UL (lower power level, 145 kW), OL (upper power level, 170 kW) and TOP (highest power level, 210 kW).
