The BMW plant in Steyr (today's name: BMW Group Plant Steyr ), operated by BMW Motoren GmbH , which is located there, is the largest engine plant and diesel competence center of the car manufacturer BMW . The plant now produces over a million engines per year. It was founded in 1979 and started production in 1982. In 2016, a total of 1,261,499 engines were produced at the BMW Group plant in Steyr.

More than half of all vehicles in the BMW Group are powered by an engine manufactured in Steyr. Engines were and are also supplied from Steyr to Lincoln, Land Rover, Opel and Toyota.
