The BMW X3 (internal designation: G01 , iX3: G08 , X3 M: F97 ) is a sport utility vehicle from the German automobile manufacturer BMW and the successor to the second X3 ( F25 ). The second generation of the BMW X4 ( G02 ) is technically based on the G01.

history

The new X3 was presented on June 26, 2017 at the BMW Spartanburg plant . The five-seater had its public premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in September 2017 in Frankfurt am Main . The vehicle came to dealerships on November 11, 2017 at prices from 44 000 euros.

Based on the G01, Alpina presented the second generation of the diesel engine- powered XD3 at the 88th Geneva Motor Show in March 2018 .

At the Beijing Auto Show in April 2018, BMW presented the iX3 , an electrified version of the vehicle as a concept vehicle for the first time . BMW presented the series model with the internal designation G08 in July 2020. It is produced exclusively in China by BMW Brilliance Automotive and will be available in Europe in early 2021.

Since April 2018, the G01 has also been manufactured in Shenyang, China, and Rosslyn , South Africa .

The X3 M (F97) and the competition model based on it have been available since September 2019. They were formally presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show of the same year.

body

Compared to the F25, the G01, which is on the BMW CLAR platform , grows in all dimensions. The c W value decreases from 0.34 to 0.29 (M40d 0.32). The covered underbody and ventilation grille slats, which open or close depending on the cooling air requirement, contribute to this. Despite the increase in size, the weight could be reduced by 55 kg through the use of light metals such as aluminum for the bonnet and doors, including hot-formed high-strength steels in load-bearing areas. In addition, the weight is evenly distributed between the front and rear axles (50:50 weight distribution).

The design comes from the Australian Calvin Luk, who designed the second generation of the X1 and was also commissioned to design the third generation of the Z4 .

The so-called kidney of the iX3 concept vehicle is closed and thus further reduces aerodynamic drag. In addition, the electric motor should get by without rare earths .

landing gear

Like other models of the CLAR platform, the X3 has a five -link rear axle in lightweight construction, in which, however, unlike the front axle, no aluminum is used. All brake discs are ventilated.

Engines

With a few exceptions (e.g. the sDrive18d for the Austrian market or the sDrive20i, which is not available in Europe), all models are equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive as standard . For the first time, an M Performance variant is available in the X3 with the M40i , and since August 2018 there has also been an M Performance diesel drive variant with the M40d .

The X3 M, which has been available since 2019, uses a newly developed three-liter in-line six-cylinder engine with a maximum output of 353 kW (480 PS) or 375 kW (510 PS) with the Competition Package.

Since August 2018 there has also been an X3 version of Alpina , the Alpina XD3 with a maximum output of 285 kW.

The drive unit of the plug-in hybrid model xDrive30e consists of a two-liter gasoline engine with a maximum output of 135 kW and an electric motor with 80 kW; the system output is 215 kW. The vehicle can reach a top speed of 210 km / h, in purely electric mode it can be up to 135 km / h. The combined standard energy consumption according to the NEDC is 2.1–2.4 l super / 100 km and 16.4–17.2 kWh of electricity / 100 km.

In the iX3, the electric motor should also do without rare earths .
