BMW uses the internal abbreviation F30 to designate the sixth generation of the 3 series . The four-door sedan is assigned to the middle class . The vehicle was introduced in 2011 as the successor to the E90 series and built until 2019. Based on the 3 Series, the Gran Turismo was offered for sale as a hatchback sedan . The other types of the 3-series have their own abbreviations, e.g. B. F31 for the station wagon ("Touring").

Model history

General

The official presentation of the F30 took place on October 14, 2011 at the BMW plant in Munich . The first models have been delivered since February 11, 2012. The four-door sedan (F30) was the first model in the series to hit the market in February 2012 . The Touring (F31) has been on sale since August 2012, with it being featured online on May 13, 2012. You could see him live for the first time at the AMI Leipzig. The station wagon accounts for a good 50% of sales in Germany (as of the end of 2018).

The Coupé and Cabriolet were and will be designed and developed as a separate series ( 4 series ) in order to represent a higher positioning compared to the sedan and touring. Sales started on October 5, 2013. Accordingly, the M variant coupé and convertible are offered as M4 , the sedan as M3 .

The vehicles are manufactured in the BMW plants in Munich , Regensburg , Tiexi (Shenyang) and Rosslyn ( South Africa ). The platform used BMW in since late summer 2011 sold BMW 1 Series ( F20 ).

Major differences to the predecessor

  • Only turbo engines are available for the F30 . Instead of the previously offered six-cylinder - Otto - naturally aspirated engines , there are four-cylinder -Turbomotoren.
  • Similar to the 1 Series, 3 equipment lines ( Sport Line , Modern Line and Luxury Line ) are already available at the market launch .
  • The 6-speed automatic transmission is replaced by the 8-speed automatic transmission 8HPxx from ZF Friedrichshafen .
  • The iDrive system is now part of the standard equipment even without a navigation system .
  • The side indicators are built into the housings of the exterior mirrors.
  • The characteristics of the chassis and drive train can be influenced via a switch.
  • Several assistance systems such as parking assist, lane departure warning, collision warning, reversing camera, speed limit info and head-up display are now available as options.
  • The weight has been reduced by up to 40 kg.
  • Xenon headlights are optionally available

Facelift

Facelift 2015
Facelift 2015

In May 2015, the 3 Series was given a facelift. Sales started on July 25, 2015.

External innovations concern the lights (headlights with light-emitting diodes are optionally available) and the front and rear bumpers. An important distinguishing feature are the modified glow sticks in the rear lights. There are not only retouches on the body, but also a modified cockpit with new materials and additional decorative elements and more efficient engines. The M-Sport package remains available.

The biggest technical innovation is the use of a three-cylinder engine. The 1.5-liter gasoline engine has a maximum output of 100 kW (136 hp) and a maximum torque of 220 Nm. BMW specifies a standard consumption of at least 5.1 l / 100 km for the smallest gasoline engine that replaces that of the 316i. Both the new three-cylinder petrol engine - which is offered under the model name 318i - as well as the four- and six-cylinder petrol engines and the two-liter diesel engines in the 316d, 318d and 320d share a basis that BMW calls the "EfficientDynamics" engine family. The engines in the 330i and 340i are new. With a maximum of 240 kW (326 hp), the latter delivers just as much as the three-liter six-cylinder engine in the M235i, but the 340i is newly designed and long-stroke (stroke: 94.6 mm; bore: 82 mm).

design

The design of the F30 is a further development of its predecessor, but is also based heavily on the design line of the 5 Series . The side view was almost completely taken over from the F10. The rear view also hardly differs from that of the 5 Series. At the front, the headlights that reach up to the kidney frame are particularly noticeable .

In contrast to the E90, the interior is again more driver-oriented. The cockpit is inclined seven degrees towards the driver.

Up to the B-pillar, the touring and sedan are similar.

Dimensions

The sedan is almost ten centimeters longer than its predecessor, the E90. The wheelbase grew by 50 mm. In order to protect pedestrians , the bonnet has also been raised. The track has been enlarged both front and rear. Overall, this gives passengers in the rear 15 mm more legroom and 8 mm more headroom. The F30 is the first 3-series BMW with a width of more than 2000 mm above the exterior mirrors and is no longer allowed to drive in the left lane, which is sometimes limited to 2 m in width, in construction sites.

The dimensions of the Touring are the same as those of the sedan except for the vehicle height.

Trunk

limousine

The trunk volume has increased from 420 to 480 liters. There is thus space for, for example, seven standard beverage crates or three golf bags. The loading sill is 66 cm high. On request, there is a through-loading system with a backrest that can be divided in a ratio of 40:20:40. If you choose the folding rear seat backrests, the storage space can be expanded to 655 liters. In connection with the comfort access, you can activate the opening mechanism of the trunk lid by moving your foot to the right of the center under the bumper.

Touring

The 3 Series Touring has been on the market since August 2012. At least 495 liters (+35 liters) of storage space are available, while 1500 liters can be used as the maximum volume. As with the sedan, the rear seat can be folded down at a ratio of 40:20:40. The rear window, which can be opened separately, has been adopted from the predecessor. The automatically opening tailgate is also standard.

At 620 mm, the loading sill is slightly lower than that of the sedan.

Furnishing

Compared to its predecessor, the scope of the standard equipment has increased slightly. It is now equipped with an automatic air conditioning system as standard and, from March 2013, with a hands-free system and USB interface. In addition, some assistance systems such as lane departure warning and other special equipment such as a head-up display are now also available in the 3 Series, including, for example, seat heating for the rear seats. Some optional extras are only available in package combinations. For example, the cruise control is only available in conjunction with a hands-free system and the servotronic steering.

Since the revision in May 2015, LED headlights (VL28 / 30) have also been available as new special equipment in the 3 Series. Previously, this option was reserved for the 4-series only.

Equipment lines

There are three different equipment lines to choose from: Sport Line , Luxury Line and Modern Line . These differ mainly in a few color accents and different interior fittings. In addition, the scope of the standard equipment is somewhat larger.

The M-Sport package has also been available since July 2012.

The Modern Line (internal code DNZCN) has not been available since November 2014 because too few orders were received for this line. The three other lines are still available.

Sport Line

With this equipment line, the sporty character of the car is to be supported in the interior with red accents. A red contrast stitching is attached to the steering wheel and the upholstery. There is also a red or black high-gloss accent strip below the interior trim . On the exterior, many parts, such as the exterior mirrors or the air inlets on the front, are in high-gloss black. The Sport Line package also includes sports seats.

Luxury Line

In the Luxury Line, the F30 should look more classic and has interior strips made of wood and decorative strips made of chrome.

Modern Line

With this, as the name suggests, the car should appear more modern. There are also some chrome strips in the interior. On the outside, many parts are finished in matt chrome. The seats are covered with a fabric-leather combination as standard. With the facelift in mid-2015, the Modern Line will no longer be offered, but the components can still be ordered individually.

M sport package

The M package has been available for order since May 2012. The vehicle can be delivered in Estoril blue exclusively for the M package. The front and rear aprons are clearly different from the other models. The technical equipment features include a sports suspension that is 10 mm lower (also available separately) and the optional “M Sport brake” with blue brake calipers.

multimedia

As standard, the 3 Series has a CD radio (including MP3 decoder) with six speakers and an aux-in connection in conjunction with a high-resolution screen with a 6.5 or 8.8 inch diagonal. It is operated via the iDrive. There is a subwoofer under the driver / front passenger seat at an additional cost . A DVD changer, a DAB + receiver (205 W amplifier output) or a Harman Kardon loudspeaker system with 16 speakers (14 for the Touring) and 600 watt amplifier output are available.

With the optional BMW apps , iPhone owners can receive web radio stations and view Facebook and Twitter posts on the on-board monitor. There is also full Internet access.

A TV function for receiving analogue and digital programs is offered in conjunction with the Professional navigation system .

Driver assistance systems

Active cruise control maintains the preset speed with the help of a radar sensor. If the distance to the vehicle in front is not set, the car automatically brakes to the speed of the vehicle in front. The maximum delay here is 4 m / s². If this delay is not sufficient, the driver is prompted to intervene by acoustic and optical signals.

A head-up display (HUD) projects information onto the windshield so that the driver no longer has to look away from the road to read the speed or the route.

With the Surround View , cameras record the lane areas to the side and behind the vehicle ( top view and reversing camera) as well as the area to the right and left of the front of the vehicle (side view) and display them on the screen in the interior. The cameras for this are in the exterior mirrors, the trunk lid and in the front bumper.

A parking assistant is also available. With the help of ultrasonic sensors, the system continuously measures the length and width of parking spaces at the roadside at a driving speed of up to 36 km / h. The parking spaces must exceed the vehicle length by at least 1.20 meters so that the system can take over the steering movements when parking. The driver still has to operate the accelerator and brake pedals.

The online traffic situation service Real-Time Traffic Information (RTTI) as an extension of the ConnectedDrive offer uses anonymized movement data of the mobile phone to determine the traffic flow for an optimized route calculation. In addition to motorways, it also covers country and urban roads. The principle is similar to the two competing systems TomTom HD Traffic and Audi Traffic Information Online .

technology

Engines

Engine compartment of the 328i

The top model 340i replaced the 335i in the course of the facelift in July 2015. This had the same N55 engine as its predecessor E90. The 340i is based on the newly developed B58 unit and has a maximum output of 240 kW (326 hp). The diesel engines remain largely unchanged, including the well-known 4-cylinder in-line engine N47 . In March 2012, the engine range was expanded to include three more drives (320i, 316d, 318d). The BMW 330d with a maximum output of 190 kW (258 hp) was introduced in July 2012, and the 335d has also been available in the sedan since summer 2013. At the end of 2012, the range was also expanded to include the 316i and 320i EfficientDynamics Edition.

From November 2012 to May 2015 there was the hybrid model ActiveHybrid 3 , in which an electric motor supports the gasoline engine. The plug-in hybrid model 330e iPerformance has been available since March 2016 . The latter has a battery with significantly more capacity, enables purely electric driving over approx. 30 km and the battery can be charged at charging stations / sockets.

Petrol engines

The gasoline engines work with a spray-guided direct injection (High Precision Injection) and a TwinPower -Turbo with two Abgaseinströmöffnungen ( twin-scroll supercharger ). The 6-cylinder in-line engines without turbocharger N53 from the 325i / 330i are being replaced by the new 4-cylinder turbo in-line engines N20 (320i / 328i) with a displacement of two liters. The non-supercharged 4-cylinder engines of the predecessor ( N43 ) will be replaced by the N13 as in the 1 Series (F20) .

With the 2015 facelift, BMW removed the 316i, 328i and 335i models. They are replaced by the 318i, 330i and 340i variants, each with completely new engines. Just like the previous 316i with a four-cylinder, the smallest engine in the BMW 318i has a maximum output of 100 kW (136 hp), but consumes 13 percent less fuel in the EU cycle. The BMW 330i replaces the previous 328i, also has the B48 modular engine with a maximum output of 185 kW (252 hp) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.8 to 6.0 seconds. EU consumption has been reduced by over 12 percent.

The third newly developed engine can be found in the new top model 340i. The most powerful variant with a gasoline engine below the M series is powered by the new modular in-line six-cylinder B58 engine, which has a maximum output of 240 kW (326 hp). In the EU cycle, the B58 engine consumes around 10 percent less fuel than its 15 kW (20 PS) weaker predecessor (N55).

Diesel engines

The diesel models have a particle filter as standard . For the 320d EfficientDynamics Edition and the 320d without all-wheel drive, a Blue Performance filter has been available since March 2012, which uses an NO x storage catalytic converter to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and thus complies with the Euro 6 standard. In the course of 2015, the next generation of diesel engines was used in four-cylinder diesel engines.

transmission

A 6-speed manual transmission is offered as standard, the 8-speed automatic transmission 8HP45 / 50/70 from ZF Friedrichshafen are also available as an option . Both transmission types support the auto-start-stop system.

environment

The term BMW EfficientDynamics brings together several technical innovations that result in lower fuel consumption while at the same time increasing performance. In addition, the 3 Series has an Eco-Pro mode. A fuel-efficient driving style is supported by adapting the drive control and the operation of the heating and air conditioning system, the exterior mirror heating and the seat heating. In addition, the drag coefficient (c was W ) reduced the sedan to 0.26. On the right and left on the outer edge of the air inlets there are also small vertical air openings for the so-called air curtain . These ensure lower air resistance through improved flow around the front wheels.

All engines fall below the limit values of the EU5 emissions standard and the US ULEV II. An Efficient Dynamics variant of the 320d with reduced performance and increased efficiency is available again. With the optional “Blue Performance” filter, it also complies with the Euro 6 standard.

Vehicle set-up

A driving experience switch on the center console can be used to change engine characteristics, driving stability control, steering characteristics and the shift program as well as the shift dynamics of the automatic transmission. The modes Comfort , Sport and Eco Pro are available. There is also a Sport + mode in conjunction with certain optional extras . If the optional adaptive damper control ("adaptive chassis") is selected, the shock absorber characteristic can also be influenced.

In vehicles with the "Business" or Professional navigation system, the current engine power and torque values can be displayed on the screen of the center console.

steering

Electromechanical power steering is standard in all versions . Servotronic (speed-dependent steering assistance) or variable sports steering, in which the transmission ratio in the steering gear changes depending on the angle of the steering wheel, is optionally available. This reduces the steering wheel movements required for large wheel turns by up to 25 percent. The respective steering ratio is effected purely mechanically through variable toothing of the rack. The Servotronic steering has been standard equipment since July 2014.

landing gear

The vehicle has MacPherson struts at the front with two wishbones hinged side by side . (Double-joint tension strut front axle). Tension struts, wishbones and pivot bearings are made of aluminum. The rear wheels are suspended from a five-link wheel suspension . The axle load distribution is 50:50.

In addition to the standard chassis, an M sports chassis and an adaptive chassis are available; the vehicle is lowered by 10 mm with both options. With the adaptive chassis, the characteristic curve of the chassis can be changed via a damper control.

The F30 has rear-wheel drive as standard , some models can be equipped with all-wheel drive for an additional charge . The 335d is only available with all-wheel drive .

Brakes

All models up to and including 328i / 330d (including variants with all-wheel drive) have 300 mm × 22 mm up to 330 mm × 24 mm brake discs (diameter × thickness) and 1-piston floating callipers at the front. At the rear are 300 mm × 20 mm brake discs with cast iron 1-piston floating callipers (piston diameter 42 mm).

The most powerful models 335i (X) and 335dX have the "small" M sport brake. This has 340 mm × 30 mm brake discs and aluminum 4-piston fixed calipers (piston diameter 40 mm) at the front . On the rear axle, 330 mm × 20 mm brake discs with cast iron 1-piston floating calipers (piston diameter 42 mm) are mounted.

An M sport brake (blue painted calipers) is optionally available. This consists of aluminum fixed calipers with four pistons at the front and two pistons at the rear as well as larger-sized lightweight brake discs. The optionally available M sport brakes differ depending on the model. The six-cylinder models and the 328i and 325d have brake discs with a diameter of 370 mm at the front. All other models receive 340 mm washers. For brake discs with a diameter of more than 340 mm, wheels 18 inches or more are required.

For the models with original brakes with 340 mm front brake discs (335i (X), 335dX) you can buy perforated and grooved brake discs from BMW. The 18-inch M-Performance brakes can also be ordered. For all vehicles, these have perforated and grooved discs measuring 370 mm × 30 mm with 4-piston fixed calipers and perforated and grooved 345 mm × 24 mm brake discs with 2-piston calipers at the rear. They are available in the different caliper colors yellow, orange and red.

safety

The BMW F30 have next to anti-lock braking system (ABS) with brake assist and Cornering Brake Control 3-point seat belts for all five seats, the front two with belt tensioners and belt force limiters , a vehicle dynamics control (Electronic Stability Control, ESP) with traction control (BMW Dynamic Stability -Control , DSC or Dynamic Traction Control , called DTC), as well as six airbags (driver and front passenger, two side airbags and continuous head airbags). In order to make it easier to recognize very strong braking, the brake lights start to flash. To improve pedestrian safety, a shock absorber is installed between the bumper beam and the bumper cladding. This is designed to reduce leg injuries in the event of an impact. The bonnet also contains deformation elements that are intended to reduce some of the impact energy.

Compared to its predecessor, the rigidity of the body has been increased by 10%.

Child seats can only be securely attached to the back seat on the outside seats. Isofix brackets are also available there. An airbag that can be switched off costs extra for the front passenger seat. Rear side airbags and a driver's knee airbag are not available.

A lane departure warning and an approach warning are available at an additional cost. However, they do not intervene in the driving process (counter-steering or braking). A so-called active protection package is also available. This becomes active from 18 km / h and automatically tightens the belt in order to remove any slack in the driver and front passenger belts. If a critical driving situation occurs, such as an impending accident, the seat belts on the front seats are tightened and the side windows and the sunroof are closed. An impending collision is detected by a front camera or radar, by emergency braking initiated by the driver or by severe understeer or oversteer. If the system believes that a collision is unavoidable, it initiates automatic braking with a maximum deceleration of 5 m / s² until it comes to a standstill. After an accident, the vehicle should be held with the brakes locked for 1.5 seconds to prevent a second collision.

Hybrid model ActiveHybrid 3

A full hybrid model of the F30 was available from November 2012 to May 2015. In the ActiveHybrid 3 , the engine of the 335i was combined with a 40 kW electric motor. The maximum system output is 250 kW (340 PS) and the maximum torque 450 Nm. The fuel consumption in combined operation according to the ECE driving cycle is 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers. The top speed in purely electric mode is 75 km / h for up to 4 km from a battery of 1.35 kWh. The trunk is reduced from 480 to 390 liters by the batteries under the floor.

Sailing is possible up to a speed of 160 km / h. The electric motor supports the combustion engine until the car is limited (250 km / h).

Plug-in hybrid 330e iPerformance

A plug-in hybrid of the F30 has been available since March 2016 . The engine of the 320i (facelift) was combined with a 65 kW electric motor in the 8-speed automatic transmission and a battery with significantly more capacity under the trunk. From this battery with a capacity of 7.7 kWh, about 30 km of electric driving up to 120 km / h are possible. The battery can be fully charged at charging stations / a wallbox in approx. 2:15 hours or at the in-cable control box at sockets in approx. 3:15 hours. The batteries under the trunk floor reduce the trunk from 480 to 370 liters. The tank capacity has been reduced from 60 to 41 liters.

Gran Turismo (F34)

In June 2013, the five-door hatchback variant Gran Turismo was introduced for the first time within the BMW 3 Series. The silhouette is similar to that of a coupé, but the dimensions of the body are significantly larger than those of the sedan, so that the Gran Turismo combines the sedan and touring types. The extended floor assembly of the 3 Series Gran Turismo is largely the same as the floor assembly of the 3 Series long version (F35), which is only marketed in China.

Long version (F35)

BMW F35

Reserved for the car market in China, a long version of the 3 Series sedan has been produced in the Shenyang plant since July 2012 . The variant with a wheelbase extended by 110 mm was presented at Auto China 2012. This increases the space in the rear knee room by 90 mm. All models are equipped with the 8-speed automatic sport transmission as standard, with the exception of the 320Li Lifestyle with 8-speed automatic transmission and the 320Li MT with 6-speed manual transmission. In addition to the well-known Luxury Line (not as 335Li) and Modern Line , MT (only as 320Li) and Lifestyle (only as 320Li and 328Li) are available as equipment lines, but not the Sport Line .

Production and sales

Around 680 sedan units were manufactured every day at the BMW plant in Munich. The maximum output was reached after three months. Unlike the predecessor, all country-specific variants are also produced from the start. A total of 400 million euros was invested in the production of the F30 in the Munich plant. The F30 is also produced in the Regensburg and Rosslyn (South Africa) plants. In 2015, 44,637 vehicles of the model were registered in Germany.
