body

The body of the G15 has a frontal area of 2.22 m² (compare VW Golf VII : 2.19 m²) and, depending on the version, a drag coefficient ( c W ) of 0.29 to 0.33. For the G14, the c W values range from 0.30 to 0.32 and the frontal area is the same. Your center tunnel and some other load-bearing parts are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . Upon request, u. a. the laser light familiar from the BMW i8 is available.

With the Cabriolet, additional tension struts and a so-called thrust panel are used in the underbody for stability. The extra weight compared to the Coupé is 125 kg. The through-loading option from the trunk is the same as with the coupé, but is smaller.

The Gran Coupé has a wheelbase of 3.02 m and an overall length of 5.08 m; the weight is 70 kg higher. Upon request, there is a 1.5 m² panoramic glass roof that extends from the front to the rear window.

As with the BMW G05 (X5), which was introduced in the same time frame, the instrument panel is exclusively equipped with digital displays ("BMW Live Cockpit Professional"). Its operating system enables wireless software updates.

landing gear

The front wheels are individually suspended on double wishbones , with the lower arm being split into two bars that are hinged next to each other on the wheel carrier in order to reduce the scrub radius . At the rear there is a five-link axle with a subframe . The dampers are electronically controlled. Active roll stabilization is available on request. The rack and pinion steering operates with electric servo-assistance . The rear axle also steers . Four-piston fixed calliper disc brakes are installed on the wheels of the front axle and single-piston floating calliper disc brakes are installed on the rear axle. The brake discs on the front and rear axles are internally ventilated. The wheel carrier and handlebars are made of aluminum.

The M8 M Competition allows two braking characteristics to be set, which affects the pedal force that the driver can feel.

drive

At the start of sales, the 8 Series will only be available with an 8- speed automatic transmission from ZF and with the variable all-wheel drive xDrive . The latter enables the drive force to be distributed up to 100% to the rear wheels.

There is a choice of two engines: a maximum output of 390 kW (530 hp), a 4.4-liter V8 petrol engine and a three-liter in-line diesel engine with six cylinders with a maximum output of 235 kW (320 hp). They meet the Euro 6d-Temp emissions standard. Both engines have direct fuel injection , four valves per cylinder and are charged: the gasoline engine has two turbochargers connected in parallel (biturbo) with double turbine inlet spirals ( twin-scroll ), the diesel engine has two stages, i.e. the two superchargers are connected in series. They are equipped with adjustable guide vanes ( VTG loader ).

With the 840i, a gasoline engine model with a six-cylinder in-line engine, which is offered with rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, has been available since summer 2019 .

The M8 is powered by the S63B44Tx 4.4-liter V8 petrol engine known from the BMW M5 . In the M8 with the maximum output of 441 kW or the M8  M Competition with 460 kW maximum output, the maximum torque of 750 Nm holds between 1800 / min and 5600 / min or 5860 / min instead of between 1800 / min and 4600 / min as in the M850i.

The intake and exhaust timing and the lift of the intake valves of the gasoline engine are regulated depending on the load and engine speed ( Vanos , Valvetronic ).
