F10 is the internal designation of the 5-series passenger car , which was produced from January 2010 and sold in Europe from March 2010. It replaced the E60 model, which had been produced since mid-2003 .

The car is 4 cm longer than its predecessor, the wheelbase is 10 cm longer. In July 2013, the 5 Series was subjected to a facelift.

Like its predecessor, the F10 / 11 was produced at BMW's Dingolfing plant. The long version sedan ( F18 ) was manufactured for China in Shenyang . The prices in Germany ranged from € 41,000 (520i) to € 113,000 (M5 Competition).

Model history

Rear view sedan (F10)
Rear view touring (F11)

The vehicle was presented online on November 23, 2009, to the press a day later in the BMW Research and Innovation Center (FIZ), and production started in January 2010. The notchback variant's formal exhibition premiere took place at the Geneva Motor Show 2010. From March 2010 it was sold in Europe. On April 10, 2010, the Touring station wagon variant was presented under the internal series designation F11 at the AMI in Leipzig. The long version F18 was shown for the first time at Auto China 2010. The public premiere of the fifth generation of the BMW M5 took place at the 2011 International Motor Show in Frankfurt , previously it was presented at the M Festival in July 2011 at the Nürburgring .

Facelift

On July 20, 2013, a revised version of the F10 came on the market, called LCI (Lifecycle Impulse) at BMW; the formal trade fair premiere took place at the IAA 2013.

The BMW Lines known from the 1 and 3 Series were introduced for the first time , namely the so-called Luxury Line and the Modern Line . These include certain exterior scopes (for example trim strips or line- specific, larger wheels) as well as certain interior scopes (for example wood or leather combinations in certain colors).

In addition, new full LED headlights were introduced at an additional cost (with selective beam partial high beam ), while the xenon headlights, which were subject to a surcharge until the model update, became standard again.

The taillights have also been subtly revised, which means that the light strips are more emphasized or appear three-dimensional at night.

Some engines have also been revised so that each variant now meets the Euro 6 standard. The 530d with manual gearbox and the 530i were therefore omitted; the 520d xDrive, for example, was newly introduced.

In addition, the 518d was introduced as a new entry-level variant. The 2.0-l diesel engine has a maximum output of 105 kW.

Detachment

After more than two million vehicles of this 5 generation in April 2016 - 334,642 were F11 station wagons - it was replaced in 2017 by the G30 / G31 and G38 models .

design

The 5 Series is similar to the 7 Series (F01 / F02 series). The double kidney sits steeply in the sloping front. Style elements of the 7 Series also appear in the interior, such as the arrangement of the navigation screen in the cockpit, which is oriented towards the driver.

The Touring resembles the sedan up to the B-pillar. At the lower end of the D-pillar is the typical BMW Hofmeister kink .

Furnishing

  • The optional navigation system Professional (like the F01 and F07 ) has a 26 cm (10.2 inch) high-resolution display.
  • From model year 2012 (production month from September 2011), the BMW ConnectedDrive has been expanded with the new live traffic situation service BMW Real-Time-Traffic-Information (RTTI). Requirement is the special equipment with the navigation system Professional with integrated mobile phone preparation Bluetooth .
  • The bi-xenon double headlights contain daytime running lights using light- emitting diode technology as well as adaptive headlights with light distribution and cornering lights .

There are also several driver assistance systems in the 5 Series - sometimes at an extra charge - such as:

Standard driver assistance systems, however, are already, for example, a cruise control with braking function or keyless engine start for all engine types.

Since the F10 is technically based on the platform of the F01 , many features of this, some of them chargeable, can be found in the F10 that the predecessor E60 did not offer, including:

  • Black panel display in the instrument cluster / radio / climate control unit
  • Electromechanical parking brake
  • Driving dynamics control with the Comfort , Ecopro , Sport and Sport + programs
  • Speed Limit Info, a traffic sign recognition system . To do this, a camera checks road signs with speed restrictions. These are shown in the speedometer and in the head-up display. From model year 2013 also with recognition and display of no-overtaking signs.

Trunk

The luggage compartment of the sedan (F10) has a capacity of 520 liters. The luggage compartment of the station wagon (F11) has a capacity of 560 to 1670 liters. The rear seat backrest of the F11 can be divided in a ratio of 40:20:40, its inclination can be adjusted in seven stages by up to 11 degrees each (special equipment). The backrest can be folded down using two operating levers in the luggage compartment. The load compartment cover lowers automatically when the tailgate is closed. The rear window, which can be opened separately, swings upwards automatically at the push of a button. The tailgate can be opened (standard) and closed (special equipment) by remote control. In autumn 2011 a device for contactless opening of the trunk was introduced. Sensors below the bumper detect foot movements and then automatically open or close the flap.

technology

Engines

Six engines were available at the start of sales (four petrol and two diesel engines). A four-cylinder diesel engine followed in the third quarter of 2010 with a maximum output of 135 kW (184 hp) and a CO 2 emission of 132 g / km . The gasoline engines have direct fuel injection ( High Precision Injection ), while the 523i and 528i versions can also run in the further developed lean operation .

When the Touring was launched, only two inline six-cylinder petrol engines and one six-cylinder and one four-cylinder diesel engine were initially available. In December 2010, the Touring was offered with four diesel (520d, 525d, 530d and 535d) and three Otto variants (523i, 528i and 535i).

For the 2012 model year, the previous engine variants 523i and 528i were discontinued. Instead, the 520i, the 528i as four-cylinder and the 530i were introduced. All diesel engines with the exception of the 520d were revised, the 525d was now a double-charged four-cylinder engine. A particularly economical variant of the 520d was also introduced with the 520d “Efficient-Dynamics Edition”. It has a longer rear axle ratio, tires with low rolling resistance and reduced air resistance, which means that only 119 g of CO 2 are emitted per km. The next generation of diesel engines of the BMW B47 type was used in the standard variant of the 520d in 2014 .

The fifth generation of the new BMW M5 was presented towards mid-2011 . Since the first M5, the maximum engine output has almost doubled from 210 kW (286 hp) to 412 kW (560 hp). The maximum torque has also increased by exactly 100 percent from 340 to 680 Newton meters. The new M5 engine was a biturbo V8 engine with a displacement of 4.4 liters and thus the first engine from M-GmbH that was no longer designed as a naturally aspirated engine. From September 2013 a “Competition” version of the M5 was also available, in which the maximum output was increased by 11 kW (15 PS) to 423 kW (575 PS) with the same maximum torque.

environment

The marketing term BMW EfficientDynamics is a package of various technical measures intended to reduce fuel consumption. The optionally available eight-speed automatic transmission is intended to reduce fuel consumption by up to six percent compared to a conventional six-speed automatic transmission. A start-stop function was initially only standard on the 520d with manual transmission and on the 530d xDrive with automatic transmission. From the 2011/2012 model year, all models (with the exception of the 528i xDrive, 550i and 550i xDrive) with both manual and automatic transmissions have a standard start-stop function. All engines meet the Euro 5 emissions standard . Diesel particulate filters have been installed in the diesel models. For a surcharge, the 530d could be equipped with a storage catalytic converter to reduce nitrogen oxides, which fulfills the Euro 6 emissions standard. However, the curb weight of the car increased by around 180 kilograms.

safety

F18 with a long wheelbase

The F10 has a stiffer body than its predecessor, front and side airbags , side curtain head airbags and active headrests for the driver and front passenger. A flat tire indicator is also part of the standard equipment, as is the active bonnet, optimized for pedestrian protection, which is raised by 30 millimeters at the front and 50 millimeters at the rear in the event of an accident. The standard equipment also includes daytime running lights, xenon headlights (from 2013) and an adaptive brake light. An extended emergency call function with automatic location via Connected Drive is also available.

Due to the shape of the seat surface, child seats can only be securely attached to the back seat on the outside seats. Isofix brackets are also available there. The airbag for the front passenger seat can be switched off so that backward-facing baby carrier seats can also be attached there when the airbag is switched off.

When carried out in 2010 Euro NCAP - Crash Test was rated the vehicle five stars, the same year performed US-NCAP -Crashtest were also awarded many stars.

Eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission

An eight-speed automatic transmission transmits the power on request. Due to the wide spread of the gears, the speed level and the noise level at high speeds were reduced. Despite the increase from six to eight stages of the ZF-8HP automatic transmission, additional components were not required. Weight and dimensions increased only slightly compared to the ZF-6HP automatic transmission. The eight-speed automatic transmission can also skip gears, so it can shift from eighth to second gear in the appropriate driving situation and only needs to open one clutch. The transmission is manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen .

Double wishbone front axle

Unlike its predecessor, the F10 does not have a MacPherson front axle, but rather a wheel suspension made of aluminum on double wishbones . In this case, the wheel guidance and damping are separated from one another and thus guarantee suspension comfort that is not influenced by lateral forces. In addition, the new front axle kinematics improves the contact between the tires and the road, which is beneficial for maneuverability.

All-wheel steering

The all-wheel steering (called “integral active steering”), which is built into the 7 Series ( F01 ), is also available in the F10. With their help, driving behavior becomes both more agile and safer. At low speeds, the all-wheel steering turns the wheels on the rear axle opposite to the front axle by a maximum of 2.5 °. This reduces the turning circle and makes the vehicle more manoeuvrable. The system also has advantages when maneuvering in tight spaces (e.g. in a multi-storey car park). At higher speeds of 50 km / h or more, the rear and front wheels are turned in the same direction, thus enabling a more stable and safe lane change. Electromechanical power steering is used in the F10.

Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid

At the 2010 Geneva International Motor Show, BMW presented a concept for a hybrid drive in the 5 Series. Compared to the 535i with the same in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine, the consumption figures should be reduced by up to 10%. The electric drive is installed between the in-line six-cylinder and the automatic transmission and has an output of 40 kW. The electric motor is connected to the combustion engine via an automatic clutch. Purely electric driving is also possible.

Long version (F18)

BMW F18 Li

A long version of the 5-series sedan (F18) was developed exclusively for the Chinese automotive market and built in a joint venture with Brilliance at the Shengyang plant. The wheelbase was lengthened by 14 cm. Comfort seats are built into the rear. Some additional features are also available. The long version is offered with a four-cylinder engine as 520Li, 523Li, 525Li and 528Li. Six-cylinder engines are used in the 530Li and 535Li versions.

530 Le

BMW F18 Le

A plug-in hybrid version (long version) was available in China from 2015 . The car has a system output of around 200 kW (272 hp), a purely electric range of 58 km and a combined consumption of 2.1 l / 100 km.
