Volume model
That in the geometric modeling , z. B. Volume model used in CAD is an extension of the surface model , which allows the description of a volume by capturing additional properties.
Geometric meaning
The model of a solid has a closed shell, which allows a clear definition of inside and outside (see also Möbius strip ). This makes it possible to check collisions between objects. The solid can be modeled directly or indirectly :
- The direct modeling is based on simple basic bodies. These are simply put together like toy blocks (volumetric model) or combined with one another with the help of Boolean operators ( constructive-solid-geometry model, CSG).
- The indirect modeling is like the surface model on the cover of the solid. A typical representative is the boundary representation model (B-rep), which defines the bounding surfaces using corner points, edges and surface geometry. The envelope is described using flat surfaces or surfaces of any shape ( free-form surfaces ).
By assigning physical properties (e.g. mass density ), the volume model is expanded to become a product model .
Other meanings
In the motor vehicle industry, popular vehicle models are referred to as volume models . The sales volume of a particular vehicle model is large. For example, the VW Beetle was a volume model, while its VW Beetle version was only a niche model.
