Magna PT BV & Co. KG (until 2018: Getrag), based in Untergruppenbach, is a German manufacturer of transmissions and transmission components for cars and light commercial vehicles and is part of the Canadian group Magna International . The abbreviation PT stands for Powertrain.
With a production of 3.9 million gearboxes per year (as of 2015, including joint ventures) Getrag is one of the largest gearbox manufacturers in the world. In addition to manual transmissions and automated manual transmissions, the company also manufactures dual clutch transmissions and is the global market leader in the latter. There are also transmissions for hybrid vehicles. Main competitors are ZF Friedrichshafen , Aisin Seiki , which belongs to the Toyota group, and Jatco .
history
On May 1, 1935, the company was founded in Ludwigsburg by Hermann Hagenmeyer as the gear and gear factory Hermann Hagenmeyer AG . Hagenmeyer, who came from a Schweinfurt brewery family, bought the Pfeiffer gear works in Ludwigsburg when he was 21 in order to set up his own business. With the small customer base taken over by Pfeiffer, business got off to a good start, so that sales of 355,000 Reichsmarks could be reported for 1935. With 77 employees, Hagenmeyer initially produced three-speed and later four-speed transmissions for motorcycles. In 1936 he built his first gearbox with reverse gear for the "Rollfix" three-wheeler, a small delivery van with a 200 cm³ engine. The focus of the company, whose number of employees had increased to 230 by 1939, remained motorcycle transmissions. During the Second World War, Getrag was subordinate to the Reich Ministry of Aviation and mainly manufactured gear and drive wheels for gear pumps. Production ended on April 20, 1945, but could be restarted with 100 people after the end of the war.
The company was converted into a GmbH in 1951 . Hermann Hagenmeyer died on April 19, 1982 and his son Tobias Hagenmeyer took over the management. In 2001, Getrag Ford Transmissions GmbH, Cologne, was founded as a 50:50 joint venture between Getrag and Ford of Europe with three production sites in Germany, France and Great Britain. In 2007, the Getrag (Jiangxi) Transmission Co. Ltd joint venture was established between Getrag and the Jiangling Motors Company Group. During the economic crisis in 2009, the company was supported by a guarantee from the state of Baden-Württemberg in order to keep jobs. In 2011, Getrag sold the drive train business consisting of the subsidiaries Getrag Corporation (USA) and Getrag All Wheel Drive AB (Sweden) to the British company GKN . In October 2012, a joint venture between Getrag and Dongfeng Motor was established. Dongfeng Getrag Transmissions Co., Ltd. to start production of gearboxes in Wuhan at the end of 2015.
In July 2015, Getrag announced that it would be completely taken over by the Canadian-Austrian Magna group . The takeover was completed at the end of 2015. The purchase price was around EUR 1.75 billion, which, taking into account the pension liabilities assumed, corresponded to an enterprise value of around EUR 2.45 billion.
