Araquari , officially Portuguese Município de Araquari , is a city in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina . It is located on the Baía da Babitonga , a branched Atlantic bay that extends about 30 km deep into the country, 182 km north of the capital Florianópolis and around 20 km southeast of Joinville , at an altitude of nine meters above sea level. The nearest beaches on the South Atlantic in Balneário de Barra do Sul are around 15 km away. In 2010 the population was 24,810, on July 1, 2019 it was estimated at 38,129.
Settlement
The area was settled very early, around 40 years after the Portuguese discovered Brazil in 1500. First of all, it is said to have been the Spaniard Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca who, with an expedition of 250 men, 40 horses and a few convicts, came across a group of Tupi Indians who were later catechized by Jesuits . A month later they came to Araquari and called it Paranaguá Mirim , "little bay" in Tupi-Guarani . A real settlement only came about when immigrants from the Azores islands arrived here from 1748 , who settled in the coastal area. The interior of the country was settled by European immigrants from the 19th century onwards - through successive waves. Germans, Italians, Poles, Ukrainians, Norwegians and others had to fight against the wilderness, make a living from their agriculture and developed a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
Climate and nature
Araquari lies in a river plain, the Rio Parati often overflows its banks and usually floods the low-lying areas used by agriculture. The area offers breathtaking natural beauty. The climate is subtropical with average temperatures of 22 ° C with regular rainfall. In contrast to other Brazilian territories, the seasons here are clearly pronounced. The winters are warm and sunny.
The name Araquari wasn't officially established until 1943. In the Tupi-Guarani language it means "refuge of the birds." The name was named after the Canal do Linguado in the bay, which marks the border between the municipalities of Araquari and São Francisco do Sul . A significant number of water birds such as cormorants , herons , gulls and other water birds such as the araquã (Ortalis canicollis) live here.
Festivals
Famous festivals of the Northern Santa Catarina region are held in Araquari throughout the year. The festival Bom Jesus , which takes place from July 28th to the actual climax on August 6th, and the passion fruit festival , which is celebrated every two years, should be emphasized. It attracts thousands of visitors who come mainly for the agricultural exhibition. Typical dishes of the region are served. The festival calendar also includes religious festivals of the patron saint of the Catholic parish and other organized festivals of evangelical churches, associations and the town hall.
economy
The town center is 10 km from the BR-101 federal road . The city is connected via the BR-280 to the overseas port of São Francisco do Sul , which is important for the region .
The excellent geostrategic location was the reason why the logisticians of the German automobile company BMW decided in October 2012 to let Araquari become the location of the first BMW automobile plant on Latin American soil. The main argument was the nearby container port of São Francisco do Sul . The decision by BMW came about with the support of the then President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff and the Governor of Santa Catarina João Raimundo Colombo and aroused great enthusiasm in the region. The local city administration therefore expects the number of inhabitants to double in the next few years. The BMW Group has received a loan from the state of Santa Catarina to purchase the site. The official groundbreaking ceremony was in December 2013, and the first BMW X1 vehicles should roll off the assembly line in 2014. The official opening of the plant was on December 10, 2014 with the start of production. The production should amount to up to 30,000 vehicles per year.
