Palmela is a county seat ( Vila ) in Portugal . The district ( concelho ) of Palmela belongs to the Setúbal district and has 17,481 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
The first settlement of the area of Palmela and the hill on which the Castelo de Palmela stands today goes back to the Neolithic period , as evidenced by several archaeological finds. Other finds confirm that Palmela was around 310 BC. Is mentioned as a Roman settlement. Around 106 AD one of the Roman administrators of Lusitânien resided in Palmela , with the name Áulio Cornélio (or Áulio Cornélio Palma). After that, the settlement was destroyed by attacks by the Visigoths. From 800 to 1198 the Moors lived on the site of today's Castelo de Palmela and had already built the first fortifications there.
The most famous building of Palmela is the Castelo de Palmela, which can be traced back in the first expansion with a chapel on the Santiagoorden after the reconquest by the Moors in 1205. Today a pousada is housed in this castle . From here you have a good view of the coast near Setúbal , the Serra da Arrábida nature reserve . In good weather, the view extends to the suburbs of the capital Lisbon .
The orienteering European Championships 2014 took place in April 2014 in and around Palmela.
Attractions
Pamela's numerous architectural monuments include a number of historical residential houses and public buildings, and some sacred buildings , such as the three-aisled Gothic - Manueline church of the Order of Santiago, the Igreja de Santiago de Palmela from the 15th century. The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building. In the village itself there are green spaces such as the Parque Venâncio Ribeiro da Costa .
In the district of Aldeia de Cima (municipality of Quinta do Anjo ) are the four rock-dome tombs of Palmela from the Copper and Bronze Ages .
economy
The community is known for its fruit and wine production.
In the 1990s, the Autoeuropa car factory jointly established by Volkswagen and Ford was opened. The internally called Mk1 MPV was produced and sold under the names Volkswagen Sharan , SEAT Alhambra and Ford Galaxy . Since the exit of the Ford company, only the Volkswagen and SEAT variants have been produced in the plant, supplemented by the VW T-Roc .
