In the area of the municipality there is a large industrial area, which is dominated by the Volkswagen Autoeuropa company . The municipality borders on a hiking area and nature reserve , which belongs to the Serra da Arrabida.
The singer Leonor Andrade was born here in 1994. She represented Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015, where she finished 14th.
