The Volkswagen Autoeuropa Lda. is a car manufacturer in Portugal in the village of Quinta do Anjo , a municipality that is assigned to the district (concelho) Palmela according to the regional structures . Volkswagen Autoeuropa is one of the subsidiaries in which Volkswagen AG has a 100 percent stake.

history

After the signing of a joint venture agreement between the Volkswagen Group and Ford in July 1991, the two million square meter facility was built in four years, including a surrounding industrial park on which the main suppliers are located. The construction of the plant is the largest foreign investment made in Portugal . The initial investment in 2003 was € 1.97 billion, and in 2007 a further € 1.1 billion was invested in the further development and modernization of the plant. A further € 677 million is to be invested by 2018 and production and products are to be converted to the modular transverse matrix (MQB). The modernization of the plant will create a total of around 500 new jobs.

Opened in 1995 as a 50/50 joint venture, the original intention was to sell a co-designed van under three brands: VW Sharan I , Seat Alhambra I and Ford Galaxy . In the production of these vehicles, Autoeuropa almost reached its capacity limit of 172,500 units per year. When Ford left the joint venture and the product life cycle neared the end, Volkswagen took over 100% of the facility in 1999, with production falling significantly. In Volkswagen's internal bidding system, the plant had to compete with other Volkswagen plants for new models, and the plant threatened to be closed.

Finally, Autoeuropa won production of the new Volkswagen Eos in 2005 , which resulted in a load factor of 79,896 vehicles with the previous models. In 2008, production of the third generation of the VW Scirocco began . Most of the 100,000 or so wagons per year are exported and represent 4.2% of total Portuguese exports.

The plant is also participating in tenders for the production of the new VW BlueSport Roadster.

Two Federal Presidents, Christian Wulff on February 11, 2011 and Joachim Gauck on July 25, 2014, visited the plant as part of state visits together with the Portuguese President Aníbal Cavaco Silva .

The VW T-Roc has also been produced at Volkswagen Autoeuropa since August 2017 .

In April 2019, the millionth Sharan rolled off the assembly line since production started 24 years ago.

Autoeuropa currently employs 4,377 people in its plant (as of 2017), and indirectly 2,350 at suppliers in the industrial area and 3,750 at suppliers in Portugal (as of 2014).
