Modular Transverse Matrix

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The modular transverse matrix, MQB for short , is a modular system for cars with transversely installed engines and transmissions that was introduced at Volkswagen AG in 2012 with the Audi A3 8V and the Golf VII . As a technical foundation , the MQB replaces the previous platforms across the Group , which differ in terms of the vehicle structure (side parts, roof, doors and lids; also known as the vehicle hat) and the system parts (components that connect the platform and vehicle structure).

The MQB is the successor to the platform concept that has been in use at Volkswagen AG since 2005.

Features of the MQB

MQB floor assembly
35 percent of the MQB floor structure consists of high-strength, hot-formed steels, and a further 12 percent of high-strength dual-phase steel . With this material concept and optimized shape, the floor assembly is 18 kg lighter than its predecessor.

Around 40 models from Audi , Seat , Škoda and Volkswagen, as well as Volkswagen commercial vehicles in the future, will be built with the new, different front and rear modules. These modules allow combinations of different wheelbases and track widths , which are manufactured with reduced weight from new high-strength hot-formed steels and dual-phase steels . By standardizing the assemblies , 30 vehicles per hour can be built in one production line, which can be increased to 60 vehicles with additional industrial robots if the need arises . Thanks to flexible shifting technology, the production lines are able to mix up the different models. The vehicles built according to the MQB standard are between 40 kg and 60 kg lighter than the previous ones.

The modular production kit (MPB) for add-on parts and assemblies will be introduced at the same time as the MQB in order to standardize production in the Volkswagen AG plants.
